TC TA SO #1 Pink Shino by Chicago Potter!

by Chip » Apr 20th, '10, 11:15

Welcome to the first ever TeaChat TeawareArtisan Special Offer! (ordering information is below!!! please follow these simple procedures. THANKS!)

It is exciting to showcase the "locals" as part of this new TeaChat TeawareArtisan Special Offer Program. I hope you will jump on board, score a great piece of TeaChat history/teaware, and support the Western Teaware Artisans!

Chris Chaney, AKA ChicagoPotter has created a special group of pieces specially for TeaChatters! He is calling the glaze Pink Shino, I don't like "pink" but I love this pink shino!

He has made them special in several ways (in a labor of love) including many of the pieces are adorned with Sakura (Japanese cherry) blossoms both small and/or in abstract in keeping with the Sakura season.

The shapes are tapered also in keeping with the season! This shape is a progression for him since joining TeaChat. He is excited to share these special pieces with his TeaChat friends! I hope you will join us and be a part of this TeaChat Special Offer!

There are both smaller cups which could be classified as Guinomi, small Yunomi, or simply Wan. And there are Chawan, teabowls! And a few incredible vases! See the photos in reply 1 and reply 2.

Just wanted to post some pics of one of the pieces in action. The one below is actually one of the glaze tests I ran, so it will be staying with me. In the finished pieces, I used two different intensities of the same pink glaze (3% and 5%) as well as a standard white-ish shino (Gustin, for those of you keeping score). The below piece has the Gustin shino and the pink shino at 5%. The 3% is a bit more subtle and exhibits more of the traditional (western) shino qualities.

The pieces are made of a low iron content, light firing stoneware body with the glaze being fired to cone 10, which is about 2360 degrees F. All of the pieces are food, microwave, and dishwasher safe. And if you don't want to use the chawan for matcha, they are great for ice cream  !

Oh yeah, I knew that pink would look smokin' hot against some vivid Japanese green. Woohoo can't wait to see them in person.

i met chris this afternoon to pick up my TC TA SO #1 Pink Shino Yunomi.
it was overcast today so i stopped in the courtyard to open the box and see the yunomi in nice diffused lighting. the impression it gave me was just that right amount of melancholy highlighted by its beautiful shape and glaze and feel. the abstract pattern was set off nicely by the spring leaves next to where i was sitting.
inside, i filled it with a simple bi luo chun, and spent the afternoon looking at it.
thank you chris.
