New Shouzhen teapot OR XuJianQing

by Herb_Master » Nov 11th, '10, 21:33

Buying a new pot, if the idea is purely to test out different clays then whether the pot is wholly hand made or half hand made then it does not really matter.

1. The Target

Certain yixing studios make pots in a variety of different styles and sizes. The tradition in many Chinese markets is for larger family / household sized LARGER pots. The tendency amongst fastidious TeaChatters is to go for smaller sized pots. The yixing studios often produce pots that are JUST the shape that TeaChatters want to own and use, but in the wrong size :(

When doing comparitive tastings in different clays an OverLarge pot can be too expensive on tea  if one wants to really try out tea density and finish the teas in different pots without getting teadrunk.

2. The expense

I see that wholly hand made pots are more expensive than half hand made pots [and I understand why that is the case]
I presume that half hand made pots REQUIRE a Model to be made and that the process of making the model requires time, effort and cost. For every wholly hand made pot, only a few perhaps result in a model being made - presumably if a NEW hand made pot suggests to the artist that THIS would be a good seller - then a model would be made.

3. The nub

I feel [strongly feel] a new order coming for a few new pots from ShouZhen and half hand made is cheaper than wholly hand made - the only trouble is - the more I scour the website for style and size the more I worry that perhaps the sizes are too large for me.

If other TeaChatters were to commit to a purchase - might Cheng be able to persuade his (/her?) father to produce a NEW model?

I find that many styles that I would like already exist in the 170ml-ish size - but would prefer one in either the 100-120ml size or 130-140ml size?

If you too are interested in a new yixing from Shouzhen can you vote for a style AND in a posted comment identify your size preference.

Presumably once a model has been made, any available clay can be selected when ordering!

I have chosen Fang Gu, Persimmon and Shi Pao but would be equally happy with several others.

I would go for 100 to 120 ml but would be just as happy with 130 ml to 140 ml.

Now I need to apologise to Chen for starting this topic

I'd say Fang Gu or Pearl which is not listed.

I like their Pearl example, I have added it to the list.

Agreed. I would like to see some classic shapes (Shui Ping, Shi Piao, Duo Qiu) offered in the 60ml-120ml range.

Better yet, how about this set of 5 shapes (or something similar) all around 80-90ml for about $250? If done well, I would buy in a heartbeat.

duo qiu!

I would be just fine with their 170 ml. Love the shape --That perfect cap sunk quietly into the chamber of the pot. It also has a cheerfulness to it that I like; an eagerness to serve. Shi Piao is second.

SInce we are talking about sizes smaller than the 170ml, I'd be more interested in the 140-150 ml. Right now, smaller than 100 wouldn't help me out much. I'd just buy a 170 instead. I think the set of 5 for $250 is a good idea, but I wouldn't commit to buy it.

Edit: and I threw my last vote in for fang gu.

They already do a Duo Qiu at 150ml,
Model: duoqiu zini 001
5 Units in Stock
Manufactured by: jianming cheng
Retail Price: $119.00
if you don't want it in 'Zi Ni' you just go to the Special Order page
http://www.zishateapot.co.uk/index.php? ... page&id=17
and quote the product url
but specify the clay that you want.

They already have a number of pots at 170ml, 160ml and 150ml.
They also have xishi and shenyun at 120ml.

This exercise is to try and persuade them to create a new model or 2 at a smaller size.

I am now in correspondence with Chinesep... about the possibility of special commissions for Teachat members - the prices look more reasonable than Shouzhen, PM me if you are interested.
I had another look around and this ShuiPingHu might be more suitable to your needs. I measured it and it is 115ml capacity.

I am considering purchasing this in each of the 4 clays
zhuni
qing shui ni
zini
qing hui ni
But if a substantial number were interested then the following clays could be available also
zhima-duanni
yousha-duanni (sand particles mixed in)
wusha-duanni (also some particles in it)
zhushahuang-duanni
gao hei ni
An even greater level of interest would make further clays available.
