Digital Scale For Weighing Tea

by teageek » Aug 24th, '07, 13:10

Hello everyone.

I'm wondering if someone can suggest a decent digital scale for weighing loose-leaf tea?

Thank you!

I use a digital scale from Upton Tea Imports.

http://www.uptontea.com/shopcart/inform ... aleUse.asp

It also has a measurement for cup weight.

After using this scale, I will never be without one.

This one is fairly popular among the tea set.

I think we talk about it and the UTI one a bit on this thread and this thread and this thread and this thread and this thread. Dang. We talk about scales far too much.

How much tea you use depends on the type of tea. The tea scale eliminates the guess work. It also keeps one from wasting tea.

There is a seller on eBay now selling the My Weigh 300-Z for $15.98 - $16.98 (Buy it Now price) shipped. At that price I couldn't resist. Just search "My Weigh 300-Z" and it'll show up. (no connection to the seller)

for those that prefer amazon over ebay, you can either buy one there for $14.95 + $7.95 shipping new or $12.99 + $7.49 used. it was weird, i did a search for "tea scale" and "digital tea scale" and came up with only books, but when i typed in "My Weigh 300-Z" it came up. i'd like to see if amazon sells any other digital tea scales, what search term should i use?

Food scales are larger, as the things you'll be weighing are larger than a teaspoon or two, and have a larger capacity (5 lbs or so). Tea scales, or pocket scales, are smaller and have a smaller capacity (300 grams or so).

I have a question...I am totally confused by weighing and measuring tea. Don't different teas have different weights? Does that make sense? Like wouldn't jasmine pearls weigh heavier than hogicha but wouldn't that weigh more than sencha even at the same measurment [or vice versa wouldn't a teaspoon of each weigh differently?]

so which is more important....the weight or the measrument?

A teaspoon of each will weigh differently, but only because the size of the leaf bits will let more leaf into the measuring spoon than others. I think it would actually be harder to get more weight in pearls into a spoon than sencha, actually, because the pearl shape wouldn't allow for the tight packing of tiny sencha.

But it all comes from the same plant, really, so 2.5g is 2.5g no matter what type of tea you use.

As far as the Triton and My Weigh go, they'll provide the same basic functions. The My Weigh is obviously more compact and it's lid makes a better tray for weight tea than the long rectangle lid of the triton would (one end is curved and sort of tapered, which would act like a directing scoop to get your weighed tea into a cup/pot with less mess.)
