Re: Friday TeaDay 12/31/2010 TEA of the YEAR 2010?
2010 has been an adventurous year for me in in Tea.
Among Japanese Green Tea, Chinese Green Tea, Oolong Tea, Black Tea, White Tea, Scented Tea, English Tea, Puerh Tea that I've tried... if it comes to tea of the year 2010, I would think it goes to Puerh Tea for it is fun to collect, has many character, no rush in drinking, and the value will increase over the years to come...
I've never spent so much on a hobby, but it sure is quite satisfying. I hope I can slow down in the purchase as it is not healthy financially... but I have been saying that for past few months already... sigh...

I have had some really wonderful teas this year in all categories, but my favorite would have to be some Alishhan Gaoshan Wulong that I sourced this year.

It was a tough choice. My TeaOfTheYear was 2010 Suzhou BiloChun from Tea Gallery, but my favorite individual session was with Zencha's Ultimate Sencha brewed 4gr in 40ml at room temp for 4 minutes (Wow!). There were many close oolong and even one great red (Mandarin's Jin Jun Mai).
I am finally getting together with my son and his friend today to taste the last two of the long jing that I collected, one from Hojo and one from Red Cirlce. Our last pairing was between Jing's Imperial and Postcard Tea's LJ, but I was too stressed from work to focus and we had too short of a time window to finish the sessions. I'll post those notes sometime in the green forum.
I had lots of inexpensive teas this year. My favorite of these was Sugimoto's Shizuoka Hachiju Hachiya shincha, which was light but had great balance and a very pleasant aftertaste.
Jing's Huang Guan Yin with breakfast.

A few tea times yet this year!
Began the TeaDay with Oku Midori with the Mrs, a gift from Brandon. From the TeaGallery, Brandon has been hiding this in cold storage for a while ... it is shincha as I recall. Nice veggie character! A lot of teas I have purchased/tasted recently have not been veggie. This is among my fave flavors in sencha! Thanks Brandon!

Its too late now auhchw tea is too good to resist. Those months quickly turn into years. Every year I try to cut back but I end up with even more but I just can't stop .auhckw wrote:I've never spent so much on a hobby, but it sure is quite satisfying. Re: Friday TeaDay 12/31/2010 TEA of the YEAR 2010?
Hard to say a 'tea of the year', because reviewing my tea notes, I see several teas rated '100' on that scale*--really outstanding sessions with an outstanding tea--but intstead of giving the title to one of those, I'll give it to a tea that didn't get rated quite so highly, but that was a bit more of a breakthrough: the 2009 spring Lao Ban Zhang loose puerh mao cha from Norbu, which I first encountered as part of a group tea tasting in another forum.
I was wary because Greg's own tasting notes on his web site described significant bitterness, and it did take a few sessions to get down the right technique for me to enjoy this tea, get past the bitter start (a not-so-flash rinse) and enjoy the long sweet aftertaste flash infusion after flash infusion, 20 or 30 or more times.
I opened my eyes to realize that even a bitter phobe like myself can enjoy some spectacular young shengs, brewed quite hot, and encouraged me to persevere with some other teas where my first brewing was more notable for bitterness than pleasure, and also I realized that I don't have to toss an individual infusion that gets a little bitter if I have room in the cup and some hot water to dilute it--often things can be rescued that way. It was a lot to learn from one great tea. But it's sold out, so I can't suggest you all rush out and buy some.
*For the record, 2007 White Bud Sheng puerh from Norbu, 2009 Spring TGY from Norbu, and undated Anji 'Precious Rare' white tea from Wing Hop Fung all got 'perfect' scores at least one time.

I am currently brewing some dragonwell from adagio. 2minutes @180F,1 heaping teaspoon per 6ounces.
Somewhat underwhelming, very mute. It is a sampler and my first taste of dragonwell. Not my favorite but it is tea

Wassup with the polls! Obviously the people who voted Japanese teas all year long are away from their 'puters today!
TD is continuing with another version of Sencha 7132, I got distracted and brewed a minute longer than planned, came out really "cherry!" Which it is supposed to, but this vendor does not post any directions on their site. An accident or serendipiTea was meant to happen perhaps?
Re: Friday TeaDay 12/31/2010 TEA of the YEAR 2010?
I think my favorite highlight of the tea year was receiving my first shincha order (and my first order direct from Japan). And the top tea was Kagoshima Sencha Yutaka Midori! The experience of having higher quality sencha for the first time was memorable for sure.
In my cup today is Lao Tai Di Qing Zin Oolong from Norbu.

The most outstanding tea for me this year was a Bai Mu Dan Wang from Camellia Sinensis. Lots of character.
Only Fukamushi Sencha Supreme so far today but it was magnificent.

Never mentioned personal fave tea of the year. Mainly because I was clueless. I am going with a gyokuro! Tsuru Jirushi from the O-C, the best gyo I have had in 12 years of drinking tea. So, although there was much great sencha, gyo gets the nod.
Finished the TD at MiL's with the Mrs. with Yutaka Midori and an organic sencha from Umami-Chaya.
