Hi Tim,

Tsujimura-sans chawan generally run in the 3K to 5K range. I saw a similar piece at Lacoste Gallery in Concorde MA and I believe that either Dai-Ichi Arts or Joan Mirvis in NY may carry him. Chawan in this price range, while eye popping for many here, are not all that uncommon in Japan. Suzuki Goro's work is around 10K to 15K.....

Good thing should not be cheap, the price is a respect to the artist IMO.

There is often work by Tsujimura and other well known ceramicists up for auction at the Mainichi auction. The prices are very reasonable and often times they go unsold. You can access Mainichi here, http://www.my-auction.co.jp/en/index.html

As soon as we all get together and group buy Mega Millions/Powerball ... and win realllly big.

So how about a $5k Picasso? Just cultural differences/values perhaps as in the west the perception of ceramics is quite different than that in many parts of the east...... not passing judgement here on whether Tsujimura's chawan are worth $X Y or Z, however I think that it should be recognized, Powerball aside, SO's aside, that different cultures place different values on their respective "art" works.

I may have put a laughing face on my question, but I was not completely joking. I've had discussions w/ Chip before about a chawan SO (okay, maybe not of $5k caliber).

Of course, I've always valued the connection I feel to a piece, or an artist's style, over the actual cost...

And that's how one should buy/collect, via the connection felt.

However there is an element of educating oneself by looking at/studying chawan which may be quite "expensive" as more often than not, they're spendy for a reason. I have been fortunate when living/traveling in Japan to be able to see/feel/use some very high end work and it has helped train my eye immensely. This is part of the reason the former Japanese prime minister Hosokawa is able to make some excellent chawan after working in clay for only a few years... his family, the former Daimyo of Kumamoto I believe, have surrounded themselves with very high quality work for generations.
