Surprise! Yesterday I was shooting some of my teaware again, and I was quite surprised to see that my Seong-il shino porcelain teapot



has developed highly stained crackling







after only about 4 sessions (and one overnight) with some Tie Guan Yin. I didn't realize this pot would be porous enough to do this, and certainly didn't expect it so quickly. Neat-o!

Wow... that staining gives it an even more amazing character. Awesome!

The first one is good sand Tieguany ~ T

Sorry I'm not quite up to par on the specifics of zisha, could you explain about the good sand?

zi = purple, sha = sand.
Sand is a better grade then clay = ni

Most of the yixing now-a-day is made of clay rather then sand. But vendors will still call it sha.

The darker one is a ni, not clay and it could be a Taiwanese or Chiu Chow wheel turned clay.

Ah I see. I guess it was a good thing to buy the other/last teapot (you can see it in the background). At first I was hesitant since it was covered in what seemed like 10 years of dust. It was pretty hard to scrub off the dust, did about 3-4 rounds of scrubbing.

I do not know why, but I love tea ware with advertising on it. Here are a few of my advertising tea ware. The quality is never very high, but luckily, they are generally free.

Here are a few more pieces. The two glass brewers were made by Menghai (Dayi). The green one was for a golf tournament in Beijing and the Brown one was for Menghai's 66th anniversary. The two bottles held pills that were supposed to give you all the healing properties of tea. They tasted so vile!

I found a pewter tea boat in a style I've been looking for for quite a while on Taobao. It took quite a while to actually obtain it. Unfortunately, when it arrived, the thing was more damaged than the photos had made obvious. There were quite a few dents and leaks, and I found out later that there had been some bad JB-Weld style repairs done to it also.

On a recommendation from a friend, I tried taking it to a local silver shop (Vroman's Silver in Monrovia, California). The guy there was very helpful, though didn't realize at first that it needed to be water tight. They had to clean it in order to do the repairs, and they did quite a lot of work on truing the edges and repairing the bottom, as well as fixing all the leaks. The shop had the tea reservoir for a couple months, and I finally got it back recently. Will try to take some shots in better light if I get a chance.

Wow! That is a gorgeous piece. It is too bad they had to clean it to repair it, but that could not be helped. That is a beautiful piece. I am jealous! Can you tell us how much it cost to repair it? If you do not wish to say here, could you PM me? I have quite a few pewter pieces I would like repaired and have had no luck finding someone good enough to do it here.

At the place here, it cost around $100. I think the guy would have charged me more if he realized how much work the repair was going to involve.

I know it's a little sad to lose the patina, but I'm actually kind of happy that it's clean for now -- and he can't get a clean surface to solder without

The center piece around the drain hole has been repaired multiple times already; I don't like that it's not more ornate around the hole, and the drain holes aren't perfectly even, but... that's how it goes.

The top and bottom pieces are of a softer, rougher pewter than the sides.
