Theine / caffeine in relation to tea's colour ?

by vacuithe » Jul 29th, '11, 10:48

I sometime have so difficulties to sleep, I wonder if tea can be guilty...
I don't know which tea is better to drink in the evening to preserve sleep.

Can you sort these tea colours according to the amount of caffeine / theine they have (from less to more) ?

White
Chinese green
Japanese green
Yellow
Wulong
Raw puerh
Cook puerh

Is this kind of classification more complicated than colours ?

It´s not possible to make that kind of generalization...from Cha Dao...
II. CAFFEINE LEVELS IN VARIOUS TEAS

Another much-repeated claim is that black tea is high in caffeine, green tea is lower, and white tea (through the naturalness of its manufacture it is implied) has next to none. While suiting the sales pitch of some tea vendors this information is so wrong as to verge on the fraudulent.

Three scientifically verifiable facts are:

1. Caffeine level varies naturally in types of tea and levels in one type may overlap with another type
2. Black and green tea manufactured from leaf from the same bushes on the same day will have virtually the same caffeine levels (within +/- 0.3%)
3. For a given bush, the finer the plucking standard, the higher the caffeine level

Something else to consider, however, is the water temperature. Here's the rate of water solubility by temperature (from Wikipedia):

2.17 g/100 mL (25 °C)
18.0 g/100 mL (80 °C)
67.0 g/100 mL (100 °C)

So boiling water yields over 3.7x more caffeine than at 176F (80C).

You probably also already know that Theanine will counteract caffeine to some degree. How much it will help will depend on your system and how sensitive you are to caffeine. However, as EE points out, there's no way to really tell how much of each they will have, though the lighter teas tend to have more Theanine.

Thanks you for answering. So, there is no rule.
There remains only one solution : to find a device which can mesure the caffeine / theine level in my teacup. Not sure such a device exists...

They exist... you just wouldn't want to pay for any of them as well as their upkeep... :D
