Thur/Fri TeaDay 8/18-19/11 Needful Things?

by Chip » Aug 18th, '11, 00:42

Welcome to a brand new TeaDay everyone! I am looking forward to a fun day on TeaChat, be sure to also share what is in your cup while you discuss the poll question!

So, today's topic will border on ... well, you decide. Has anyone read The Collector by John Fowles or Needful Things by Stephen King? People collect the strangest things, sometimes weird or downright curiously bizarre.

Well, it has had me wondering if anyone here on TC collects (or had collected in the past) 'oddities' that might fit into this strange category? We all just might be surprised by the collections of our fellow TCers.

I am looking forward to reading about your collections. Bottoms up!

I collect a lot of things, but nothing, I think, that would be considered odd. I think what people might consider odd, is the quantity of items I have collected. I can not come close to displaying all the things I have collected, but someday, when I open my teahouse, I will have a museum of tea and tea ware attached to it, so then they will be displayed.

For sure, my humble teapot collection looks very odd for people visiting and who are not part of the "tea world."

hum...fruit seeds is that odd?
I eat a ton of fruit, so I leave the seeds out to dry, then put them in a nice glass container. Something fun to look at me thinks. Peach seeds always make me go ooooooo.

I would collect fall leaves, they really are spectacular around here, but don't have any cases or things to preserve them in. I do pick up some nice ones I see lying around and put them on my tea table though during fall.

Puerh today, some 1999/3 Xia Guan Jia-Ji Toucha from houde.
This one is still too young to put small quantity 3.5g-260ml water, brew long time, no bitterness, but I do enjoy a little bit of the kick. Wow is this thing tightly pressed!

So I was browsing houde blog today, read that the older the tree the faster the ageing in general. Puerh drinkers out there have you found this to be true?

Would a collection of cat whiskers be considered odd? :)

   whoa, this was the "inspiration" for this topic ... I kid you not. I would honestly have thought no one would mention they collect cat whiskers.

I only collect ones that have fallen out. The reason, they can be used for pollinating particular types of succulents from Africa ... another weird collection though now more in the past.

I store them in a Hagi cup.

I've collected cat whiskers too! I used to do it when I was in elementary and middle school; we had this Persian who would leave rolling clumps of cat fur (picture a bunch of fluffy grey tumbleweeds rolling around the living room  ) and whiskers all over the place, and I'd pick up the whiskers and put them in my dresser. When Hootie died, I put the whiskers in my jewelry box... I know this sounds silly, but one day when I find juuuuust the perfect locket, I'm going to put them in there. That cat was my first best friend.

Hmmm, other odd collections-- let's see, I used to collect seeds that would fall from trees when I was a little kid, my friends and I would pick them up off the ground at recess and occasionally fight over the really big seedpods. Now I collect action figures, unusual pens, and interesting candy boxes.

Black dragon pearls this morning (yum!), a lot of iced green tea to keep me hydrated while packing to go back to college, and I'm currently waiting on some longjing to cool down to non-mouth-burning temperatures.

Megalodon teeth (prehistoric giant sharks) ... a pretty serious collection. Some are almost hand sized.

Great TD started out with Hana No Kaori with the Mrs. served up in a Naotomi Susumi wan. Next up, Miyabi served up in Sendai.

Currently, SLT, iced. Refreshing!

I think there are some more unusual collections to hear about. So yesterday's TeaDay will continue into Friday.

Please continue to share what is in your cup throughout the day.

Also continue to discuss yesterday's topic.

You can also discuss whatever is on your mind since this is our TeaRoom!

We are looking forward to sharing this TeaDay with everyone. Bottoms up.

Haha! I too collect cat whiskers, but I use them for painting. When I do a traditional Chinese landscape painting, I like to paint lots of little people in the villages and markets that are hidden amongst the mountains and I use the whiskers to paint their facial features and hair.

When I was a child, I used to go to the Art Institute in Chicago and stare at their Chinese paintings for hours. I used to like to make up stories for all the little people in the landscape paintings. So, when painting I now do the same.

I live in Florida, and sometimes we go to the Peace River (located south central Florida) to look for these megalodon teeth. It is very rare that someone finds them, but if you do they can sometimes sell for thousands of dollars.
