Stains and leaks (before and after)

by night.owl » Aug 31st, '11, 11:46

I haven't seen a thread like this anywhere, but I'm fascinated by the progression of staining in just about anything with crackles in the surface. Do you have any before and after pics? ...or even before, and "patiently waiting for after" pics? (you can always come back and update at a later date!

Also, a new curiosity for me is leaking Hagi ware (especially after discovering one of mine is a leaker of epic proportions). Have you captured any pics of yours leaking?

(I'm getting a new camera, so I'll post some of mine soon!)

Interesting topic ... hope to see lots of stains and leaks. In the world outside of TeaChat, etc. leaking and staining would on the surface (pun intended) be a negative aspect. But here it is endearing!

Just to point out some historicity on the topic ...

Well, the beloved Hagi topic ... lots of staining and leaking going on there. http://www.teachat.com/viewtopic.php?f=36&t=8562

I think the staining is much more documented on TeaChat.

There is the "The Mother of all Biwa" Hagi SO topic. That one was quite the leaker. I think that was an initiation into the extreme "leakability" of Hagi. The "mother of all Leakers!"

Thanks for the links, Chip! The first one is actually where I got the idea for the before and afters in one thread (I love that thread, BTW!).

I'm going back to devour the thread for the second link now.

debunix, very nice! I can see where the cracks are starting to darken already. I love the peachy color as well, should show off quite nicely over time!

I have my new camera, now for a few days of playing around. Hopefully, I'll be competent enough to post by the weekend!

I just bought a new white crackled teacup. I took photos of "before" but I have no idea when the crackles will darken because I tend to drink lighter teas.

I was going to buy more of them but another customer bought all that were left. I had this idea that I was going to devote different cups to different teas and see if the crackles will stain in different colors but I'm not sure if it is just a wild fantasy?

Will it be possible to have green crackled (Long Jing?), light crackled and dark crackled (from pu-erh or black tea) cups by doing this?

I was hoping they would look like tea eggs eventually (I often make tea-eggs with black tea or pu-erh).

Crackles will all stain brown. The same compounds that were not oxidized during the processing of the white tea will oxidize when the tea sits and when it stains the cup as brown as any other tea.

I believe the rate or speed of staining will differ from tea to tea. I often note how fast some members cups will stain so much faster than ones I have used just for greens. One variable has usually been the type of tea the cup was used for.

Another thing that may speed up or slow down the process is whether you give the cup a presoak before using each time ... which I usually do or at least fill with hot water.

Does a pre-soak make it stain faster?

I believe it slows the staining ... but each time we think we have this all figured out, we find there are exceptions to every ... theory.

I've finally got some half decent pics. First is my little Hagi Guinomi by Mukuhara Kashun, new and after about 3 months use.

This one could very well turn out to be my favorite, over time!

Next baby is my leaker. I couldn't get it to leak again like I did in the fuzzy picture, so I'm posting that one for now.
