How is water in upstate NY?

Postby eugene_b » Nov 10th, '11, 11:04

Hi there!

I'll soon be moving to upstate NY (somewhere close to Albany) and I am completely un-familiar with that place (as well as that part of world actually). How is tap water in those places? Is that ok for tea? Or do you use some kind of filter (if yes, which one)? Or is it so bad that you use bottled water (in that case, please send me some bottled water companies that you use).

Where I've lived so far, the tap water is horrible and it took me some time to find a normal water vendor that sells good tea water. So hopefully with your help I'll be able to speed up the process and quickly find normal water when I move in to the new place.

Thanks!

I grew up in central NY (near Ithaca) and we had great water. It was hard and left mineral deposits, but it tasted really good. :?

EDIT: I also lived in Albany for a time, but at that time I used a Brita faucet filter because I lived in a really old and grubby house in a bad neighborhood and didn't trust the cleanliness of anything around me. So it may depend on where exactly you are.

Like Karma said, it definitively depends. I live in the Syracuse area and have had excellent well water when living in more rural areas, but that too depends on the well and location. I live in a small town now and the water goes through cycles of being chlorinated, so often it tastes like pool water and I opt for bottled. Were in CNY??

Only NYC people call Albany "up"state

I lived in Central NY (Syracuse) for several years. The water is fabulous. Water of Skaneatles can be taken directly to the lake for drinking.

I don't know about Resselaer though. Once I passed by Route 9 about 70 miles north of NYC. The motel didn't install water purifying system and the water smells like sulfur.
