Professor Collins said he did not recommend that people change their teadrinking habits based on the research.

I've been drinking copious quantities of tea since about the time I joined TC in 2009... my arthritis doesn't seem to be any worse for it, I don't drink diet/caffeine soda anymore, all but stopped drinking wine, walked 3000+mi in the last 2.5yrs, and still haven't dropped a pound :( ... I don't have any personal experience but I've read crystal meth works pretty good

^need a doctors recommendation for medical marijuana and just make up some cannabis tea infusions...will need the crystal meth to counteract the likely 'munchies' potential weight gain from the MMJ

'It's definitely an association but the risk is very small,' he said...78 per cent more likely to develop rheumatoid arthritis than those who drank no tea...Drinking any amount of tea increased the chance by 40 per cent, compared with those who abstained entirely
Statistics are not my expertise, I would like to see what he would consider a high risk then... 99% or greater :o

Every other year it seems there is a study linking wine or coffee to increased risk of breast cancer...which comes a few years after another study or two that show moderate consumption of these *reduces* risk of breast cancer

http://www.arthritis.org/autoimmuni-tea.php
Green tea has a pale color and delicate taste but new studies show it apparently has a robust ability to tamp down inflammation associated with two autoimmune disorders – rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and Sjögren’s syndrome.
http://nccam.nih.gov/research/results/s ... 120808.htm
NCCAM-funded investigators at the University of Maryland and Rutgers University examined the effects of green tea polyphenols on RA by using an animal model in rats. The animals consumed green tea in their drinking water (controls drank water only) for 1 to 3 weeks before being injected with heat-killed Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37Ra to induce arthritis. The researchers found that green tea significantly reduced the severity of arthritis

Its somewhat strange how a doctor can write like 4 paragraphs and then near the end of it make a contradictory claim.

"laughing at clowns has shown to increase the risk of face cancer. This based on a random selection people blah blah blah blah blah blah
OMG clowns are bad... you'll get cancer...
blah blah blah

blah blah blah etc...

supplemental blah blah blah

in addition blah blah blah

furthermore....

oh but, clowns are cool to laugh at and face cancer isn't that much of a factor and doctors still recommend laughing at clowns because they are sorta funny. blah blah blah

Still that one threw me for a loop.

As a native born Briton, I should like to point out that the Daily Mail is rather well known for linking anything and everything to cancer. To the point that their is a website called the "Daily Mail oncological ontology project" charting their multiple articles addressing the topic.

I've been a heavy tea drinker for a couple of years now (moderate before that). I don't lose any weight because of my tea drinking, but I think that's only because I love food so much, and refuse to exhibit any self control when it comes to a delicious meal.

But one thing I have noticed is that the arthritis that has settled in two old herniated disks in my back, has been non-existent for about the past year. In fact, I completely forgot all about it until I read this post. I haven't been doing anything else differently in my diet or exercise since then. I have heard that a teaspoon full of apple cider vinegar per day (Braggs brand is one good one), helps combat the inflammation, and I have a bottle in my cupboard -- untouched. So I guess I'm leaning towards the tea helping. I drink anywhere from 4-6 cups per day, or more.

Don't forget that the researcher didn't write the article; the Daily Mail did. It's pretty common for researchers to find some correlation and some journalist to call it causation. It could very well be that people with arthritis have something else in common that causes them to drink tea.

Here's the quote that Science Daily used:
"We do assert the need for caution in the interpretation of these findings as no strong causation effect has been confirmed, and encourage patients with rheumatic diseases to consult their physician before making any significant changes to their diet or caffeine intake"
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/artic ... -risk.html

If there were a causative effect, then you'd also expect to see fewer instances in countries that drink less tea, like the US, but:

For any of you who have tea induced arthritis, I recommend walking into a swarm of bees. According to the mayor of a very small town nearby, getting stung by about 200 bees cured his arthritis. So there you go. The antidote.
