Where to find gaiwan in New York City

by wokeupfuzzy » Mar 13th, '12, 20:58

I'm new here and looking to purchase a gaiwan to replace one that recently bit the dust (always sad when this happens!). I thought you all seemed like a knowledgeable bunch.

I will be in New York soon visiting friends and was hoping I might be able to find a suitable one there rather than ordering online. My old one was plain white but this time I'm looking for something with a design/painted.

Does anyone have any suggestions for where to look? Any places with a decent selection? Basically anywhere accessible by subway (Brooklyn/Queens/etc are fine, too).

I would try http://www.fangtea.com/ in Flushing - they have some decent quality porcelain. I've heard it's a bit of a trek, though it is technically accessible by public transportation.

You could also try Ten Ren in Chinatown.

Thanks, I will check it out. I was thinking Flushing would be a good idea; there are probably many places to look there but I've never been and really have no idea where to start.

Yeah - I'm sure the NY folks on here may be able to suggest some other places. The other one I knew of is, I believe, out of business now.

Emerald Garden a bit down mulberry off of canal ( away from the little Italy side) has cheap gaiwans. Ten ren might be nicer but more money.

Fang has a gaiwan for any price range, including Richard Branson.

Great, thanks! I'm familiar with that area in Chinatown so I will probably poke around there a bit. I tried looking up Emerald Garden but there didn't seem to be a web result or yelp page of any sort - is it also called something else? I guess I can always just wander down that block to look for it, it's near Ten Ren anyway.

So Fang has a good selection? From experience, I've found tea shops to have less selection (or no selection) but generally better quality. I'm not picky about the price, but if I end up going out to Flushing, I hope there are few options.

I too Googled Emerald Garden, but to no avail. Would love to check it out since TenRen's Gaiwan selection is limited. I have a 2oz one that works for me, but would love to upgrade to a 4oz one for when I have company.

EDIT: I just poked around Google and found a place called Jade Garden on Mulberry so perhaps this is it? There's a Google Maps view of the inside of the store and there are some Gaiwan and tons of Yixing pots.

"jade" garden is not exactly the best place to buy a gaiwan, it just might be the easiest to find for visitors.

Any other place in Chinatown you recommend?
