Resteeping Baozhong

by bambooforest » May 19th, '12, 13:31

Greetings people of the forum.

Is it me, or is it true that baozhong doesn't resteep well?

I have a 2nd place winner baozhong from Taiwan, but it seems like that lush, thick flavor significantly diminishes on any subsequent steep. I use about a gram per ounce, so while not strictly gong fu, there should be enough leaf, with a longer steep time, to get some good flavor in subsequent steeps.

With other oolongs, the 2nd steep has all the lushness that the first steep has. But with baozhong, the taste just seems to drop off right after the first steep.

Is this your experience with baozhongs? Please feel free to share your opinions on this matter.

How many BZ have you tried? Do you have others to compare to? I had one BZ that went for about 10-12 infusions before starting a few days of overnight infusions. That's pretty rare though. I can normally get at least 4-7 good infusions out of the ones I've tried.

You're right, I don't have much to compare it to. That would be the only way to know with certainty. Nevertheless, I am enjoying it and it does strike me as high quality.

You aren't using nearly enough leaf. I'd go with more leaf. For gong fu for Gaoshan I do 7g::100 ml and for Baozhong 10g::100 ml. If you don't want to do gong fu and get good results for gaoshan at your ratio you might want to increase you ratio for baozhong proportionality.

I am curious, how do you get 10 grams of uber fluffy leaf BZ into 100 ml of water?

I had exactly the same question, stopped there for a while, scrolled down the page and then saw your question

Its actually not that hard. You just need to have stuffed a few teapots or gaiwans in the past. In 100 ml, I dare say I could potentially put at least 12 if not 14 grams of leaf, without intentionally breaking most if not all of the leaves, and even then it would just be a break in two, not a crush.

I had a baozhong on this recent trip to Taiwan that resteeped for what seems like an infinite amount of infusions, but that's a pretty special tea and is very pricey
