New TeaDay 7/5/12 Hot and Humid, Hot or Iced?

by Chip » Jul 5th, '12, 11:39

Welcome everyone to TeaDay ... in our virtual TeaRoom today. Shall we brew and share what is our cups today, all day?

Today's TeaPoll and discussion topic was inspired by discussions on our IM this morning! It is a comparison of tastes and preferences for this hot, humid weather.

Since it is the 'Dog Days' of Summer, what ratio of hot tea to iced tea do you drink as the heat and humidity start to swelter? It is almost 'peasoup' out there today and Iced Tea seems like the ticket for the beverage of the day.
Bonus question ... Do you have a favorite summer iced tea? Please share.

As always, we are looking forward to sharing TeaDay with everyone! Bottoms up !

With temps spiking 100+ degrees around here I've been having a lot of fun experimenting with iced tea brewing... most days I just have my hot tea before work though.

Currently enjoying the last of 88 nights shincha from Hakoniwado with iced high fire TGY in the fridge. 8)

Waking up and drinking some cold tea made from SLT the evening before is really refreshing and resurrecting on these hottest of days.

Percentage is hard to say, I brew all the teas HOT and then at the end of the day I make iced tea with all the "remains of the day." So, 0% iced tea based upon teas brewed specifically for iced tea ... 100% in the loosest interpretation based on making iced tea with virtually every tea I make.

Though I am seriously considering brewing 1st steep iced sencha today ...

Began the TD with iced sencha from last evening ... as I was brewing hot Miyabi (O-Cha).

EDIT: I love honey ... so for iced SLT, I add a touch of honey which adds a nice dimension to the 5-6th steepings iced tea. Plus it acts as a natural preservative, no browning iced sencha!!!

It being incredibly hot once more here in the Midwest ( as with most the rest of the country), so much so that even with AC running the house just somehow seems "hot." Decided to start my Tea day by putting a bunch of Sencha hosen in my kyusu, adding just a touch of water, then filling it with ice cubes. They are still melting but I should be able to drink soon.

I voted 90% hot 10% cold, it has to be *really* hot for me to consider drinking my tea cold. Mostly I just let it cool a little longer than usual in summer, and avoid the kinds that heat the body the most.

Right on. I've been drinking a lot of green tea and white tea with the occasional oolong, and the rare pu-erh.

Am wondering now, if I brewed up a whole pooper-ton of tea, and refrigerated it, how it would turn out?

I usually make up some batches of green tea like Salada or whatever and sweeten it with honey and add some mint for my summertime iced tea refreshness needs. Still drink way more "hot" Sencha in the summer though

Went with 90% hot and 10% Iced. I like hot tea so much more than iced tea, but I have a few teas that are not up to snuff when brewed hot, so I delegated them to the summer when I do my French Press iced tea.

Today was the rare exception that I made an iced tea, not in my french press, and with tea I would normally drink hot.

Looking forward to trying the ice brew method in my kyusu... takes a lot of leaf and you only are supposed to get one steep though... I'm doing two

Also want to try iced matcha just for poops and giggles.

On really hot days when I can't escape the heat, 60/40, maybe....but even on the hottest days, a/c in the office keeps hot tea acceptable or superior. But when traveling or otherwise without benefit of A/C, I like it cool.

One of my favorite summer drinks is iced mate and fruit juice. Most fruit juice works pretty well, though I think orange juice is one of the better (and easier to find) choices. Lime juice and raspberry juice also work well.
