White Peony (Bai Mu Dan) Produced Outside China

White and yellow teas are among the most subtle.

White Peony (Bai Mu Dan) Produced Outside China

by AlexZorach » Mar 15th, '12, 16:25

I've seen (and tried) Silver Needle produced outside of China; it seems relatively widespread now. Until recently, however, I had not encountered any Bai Mu Dan (White Peony) produced outside of China.

On the course of working on RateTea, I recently added two examples of Bai Mu Dan produced in India, one in Kerala, Oothu estate, and one in Bihar, from Doke estate. Sold, respectively, by Zhi Tea and Lochan Tea.

Has anyone tried anything like this, either these teas or others? I found these teas particularly interesting, both because they were the first examples of this type of white tea produced outside of China, and they both originate in unusual regions which are not at all well-known for single-origin teas. Incidentally, both are organic certified.

Butiki Teas sells a Malawi White Peony from Thyolo which I got a small sample bag of with a purchase a while back.

I liked it, it has that particular taste that you expect but perhaps not as strong as the 'real deal'.

I wrote a little about it here http://blekte.blogspot.se/2012/01/malaw ... -teas.html

Use google translate at your own risk... :D
