Shelf Life of Home Made Simple Syrup?

by teasme » Sep 20th, '12, 11:23

I started making simple syrup at home and wanted to know how long it will last? Do I need to refrigerate it or leave it at room temperature? Is it best to keep it in a glass jar or plastic container? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

I usually keep mine in a stoppered chemistry type flask / beaker. I wouldn't use it after more than a few weeks. Sterilizing the glass container first might help a little bit in terms of reducing the likelihood that mold will grow quickly.

In my very limited experience, thicker (greater than 1:1) syrups seem to grow mold a little faster.

Thank you both for your help. I just have it in a plastic container. I hope that holds up. The moment I start seeing mold will give me a better distinction of how long it will last in the future. Is glass better for storage than plastic?

how bout honey?
Or adding some honey to your ss. That should preserve it a lot longer.

Interesting hypothesis.

Side by side testing would be interesting.

It will be easier to blend the honey in evenly if the SS is at least slightly warm yet.

Interesting. Just a dab of honey? I would love to just make a bunch of simple syrup and have it last instead of throwing it out. Thanks for the suggestions.
