MountainTea - The OTTI Afterglow

Postby Remick » Oct 1st, '12, 16:47

Received my order quickly, then again, Cerritos (in southern CA) is only a few miles away. Because I hadn't heard any negatives in this area, I wasn't too concerned, but fast shipping is always nice.

On to the more important things, like a free bag of Dong Ding with my order. We're talking near as makes no difference, one ounce of tea. And here I thought Den's was cool with their extras. Actually, it's less that there was a sample and more the fact that the order wasn't THAT big. Yet, a free bag all the same. Classy. Very classy.

Here's where I need some advice from those who participated in the OTTI: A bag of Imperial Pearl is sitting here staring at me but I was hoping for some time, temp, & ratio breakdowns before tearing into it. Chip? Deb? Anybody?

Finally, for those of you who ordered, what were your selections? For me, I also have some Spring Gao Shan in addition to the aforementioned Dong Ding.

Imperial Pearl. I am pretty happy with 2:1 ratio, 6 grams in 3 ounces water. Near boil for first steep. I am sure I brewed well over a minute with no problems.

Hope you have better luck with it this time! Olfactory memory can be quite hard to break!

For right now, I'll sum I.P. up with this:

It's as if it was different tea. Very similar, yes, but so much better.

Wet leaf aroma:

Joy of joys, it's... a little smoky, and rather earthy.

Take a around 200ml cup add 3 around 4 grams of tea. Rinse and add water. Add water to taste while drinking.

Larger cup, small amount of tea, add water while drinking...

Would I be correct in calling this "grandpa style" (with nod to MarshalN and his blog)?

Yes. I think that is generally the best way to do hong cha and lu cha for that matter. Taiwanese reds often do particularly well.

Since I've been playing with the Imperial Pearl more, I haven't done any measurements. I have brewed it relatively with hot water (205 from the kettle), and combined infusions/bulk brewed, tasting as I go to be sure the first infusions don't overwhelm.

It's quite forgiving, and when I've overdone, I just dilute with more water until I like it again--a sort of variation on 'Grandpa style', I guess. I keep a pitcher of cool water handy on my tea tray for diluting and cooling as needed.
