A pound of Teavana's MatéVana is $46.40. A pound of SpecialTea's MatéChino is $25.10. They are the exact same blend. (Note: SpecialTeas is currently only offering this in a 2 lb size for $45.15.) I bet Dragonwater's chocolate vanilla thing would be similar, though not exact.

Actually, I have yet to order directly from them...but I really appreciate some of their blends. They make me seem like God to my Teavana-addicted friends.

This particular blend, though...it's kind of expensive everywhere when you figure that a pound of regular roasted yerba mate from a place like Guayaki is like, $12. The MatéChino just isn't different enough from plain roasted yerba to have me justify that price.

I might just try that Dragonwater blend, though. It's identical to SpecialTea's Maté Tiramisu, which one SpecialTea's reviewer says is near indistinguishable from the MatéChino. Dragonwater has it at $16.25 per pound, compared to SpecialTea's $25.10. (Which is like 2 lbs worth at Dragonwater...$28.)

Well that sucks. The MatéVana is one of Teavana's more popular flavors, and it was really nice knowing where to get it for so much less. I've looked and looked and can't seem to find the MatéChino anywhere, which makes me think Teavana worked a deal with the common supplier.

Ah well. I have some MatéVana, so I'll order up some of that Tiramisu stuff and do a comparison.

Sorry to bring this post back from the dead -- I e-mailed Tammy at SpecialTeas and Gary at Dragonwater today to ask them about the status of this tea and if either would ever carry it in the future. We'll see what they say -- there are so many people who love this tea and paying $5.80 for 2 oz. is complete insanity -- once I get an answer, I'll post it up in Authoritea.

Another of Teavana's popular products, Earl Grey Creme, is on sale at Dragonwater - $7.90 for a 1/2 lb.!
