Re: 1800 plus Old Tree
From my best guess with google translate help, it was the oldest documented tea tree, estimated age 1800 years, and died of a combination of lightning strike, stress of changing environment, and general old age.

Qianzhizhai tree, Bangwei tree and Fengqing hongjiazhuqing tree. Funny how I've never heard of a specific Jingmai tree, given the HeShihua labeling of millenium tea. I also believe that there could be a Bulang tree here and there that's pretty old.

Re: 1800 plus Old Tree
The reports I've seen say that the tree had been infested with termites and other insects, and that the trunk core was hollowed out. Wind and rain erosion allegedly contributed to it's weakening as did some rot, impairing it's nutrient absorption ability.
society.yunnan.cn doesn't seem to specifically mention the lightening strike, though the tree was certainly struck by lightening some years ago.
