Traveling Tea Sets

by theredbaron » Nov 16th, '12, 10:10

When i am traveling i do not want to miss tea drinking, especially not with a nice tea set, including Yixing pot, nice cups, etc., I have two sets, one really tiny one, for the small luggage. The pot is from the 80's, i thing factory 2. As a size comparison, the red towel is about 13 cm long. Pot and cups go into the woven box, protected by the towel.

The second set is a bit larger, for the larger luggage. The pot is one of those from purple clay dipped in red clay, and the cups Qing dynasty, made for the SEA export market. The size of the box is about 9 cm high.

I wish I could find small teapots like that. It's not an easy task in the US South.

Rolled oolongs are the only teas that are quite difficult to use with. You get them in easily, but when they expand than it's not much space left for water ;)

But it actually is not too much of a problem with both Yancha and Pu Erh. Some of the larger leaves have to be broken or folded, but it's anyhow just a traveling pot, or when in the evening, i want a little bit more tea.

It's not so easy here anymore as well if you want good quality clay.

Thanks. :)

They have been, and are still, a work in progress. The last piece, so far, has been the little tin ware saucer, which i just got a few weeks ago on ebay.
I chose the pots because they are sturdy, the little black one i got in Malaysia, maybe 12 years ago, and the red one around 10 years ago in Bangkok - it's quite thick walled.

One of the blue & white cups i got maybe 20 years ago in Penang, the other, fitting, 5 years ago in KL. The larger saucer i got in Borneo in '98, the saucers, which i use as tea boats, i got 2 years ago in KL.

I love the basket ware boxes, they are made in southern Thailand, but unfortunately almost impossible to get anymore in this quality - fine, but not too fine - perfect protection. I fear that the last craftsmen may have died.

Pretty pretty sets! I was thinking of using one of my 40ml pots for this purpose too but was too much of a coward :) Instead I just bring around a 80ml gaiwan and 3 small cups in a padded box.

I have a great, though biggish, tea board I travel with. It is a bit tall, and I keep inside a 110cc zini, though I just ditched the cups (the gaiwan broke in Nepal, and again in Malaysia). I pad it out with all the tea I keep on me: a few oolongs, a green, and a bunch of random puerh. Seperate, I also have a Taiwanese tea buddy thing with a brewing basket inside.

My wife hated me for lugging it all over, but after 9 months now living on the road, it has paid for itself 100 times. I'll try to get a pic posted.

Not the most pretty, but useful, and this setup has made it to 15ish countries with me, over 3 continents. Travel-stained, travel-worn!

I'm a bit too lazy to edit my photos, so here's a traveling set I bought recently, mostly Japanese teaware
