Deeply sorry for your loss Seeker.
You just made a great acquisition. Matcha in this oni-hagi chawan looks great. I am also looking forward to see its evolution.
As for info for Kodai, I found this : http://www.e-yakimono.net/html/kodaik.html And this is my most beautiful kodai. It gives power to this Hagi chawan.

I can chime in on some of the word stuff.
Koudai, or 高台 (second definition at that link) means "high platform" (高 meaning high, and 台 meaning platform, or stand). As far as I understand, it is a term used only with pottery (that is, you would definitely not refer to your own feet with this word!).
Oni (鬼) indeed means 'demon' -- it usually refers to a specific type of Japanese ogre demon (two horns and wearing a tiger-striped loincloth -- long story). Sometimes you'll see a "hime" hagi (which would mean "princess") -- I took that to be "silky smooth" as compared to the "oni" clay's roughness.

seeker,
Thanks for the explanation of koudai & for getting my humor which usually gets misunderstood in print.
I'm just starting to learn how much matching teaware w/ tea increases enjoyment. Threads like these help.
(Just realized I don't like the word "teaware", should just use the separate words, "cups" etc.)
all the best

Well, here goes my first matcha experience.
I give thanks to the generosity of my friends.
A colleagues mother was a tea teacher and this chawan come to me through her.
*previous post here*: http://www.teachat.com/viewtopic.php?f= ... 55#p229374
She stopped by to give me a hand with matcha preparation. Another friend gifted me the small, but delightful packets of matcha. It made quite a nice, rich froth and was not very bitter. It reminded me of seaweed.
For the first bowl we used 3 grams of matcha and about 70 ml of water. My friend asked for half that amount.

Bio -- that is probably the most awesomest picture of matcha being made ever. I think that really captures the process well!

I'd like to share with you a new chawan my wife gave me for Christmas.
Dan Russo is the ceramicist.
I think he calls this one 'Starry Night' due to the feldspar scattered throughout.
I love this chawan. One of the things I love is the ash that has formed green glassy glazing and crazing in a variety of places.
Also - after I'd opened the gift of this chawan, my wife and I found two hearts in the chawan - I show one in the last photo. ...aahhhh.
I wish you all a Happy New Year - please tonight and always - be safe, behave consciously, may you be well, and may you be happy.
