Sunday 11/25/12 What to do with teas you will never drink?

by Chip » Nov 25th, '12, 11:28

Welcome to a new TeaDay, TeaChatters. It's quite chilly and cloudy here today, so looks like a great day for tea and sharing.

Today's TeaPoll should be informative and may contain some choices not mentioned in the poll, so ... feel free to share with us your methods of clearing out teas you won't drink. Don't forget to vote in the poll!

I am looking forward to sharing with everyone today, Bottoms UP!

I move the tea to the rear of the top shelf of the tea cabinet. That way when I find it it's so old that I can't possibly be expected to drink it - life's too short for stale tea. I do have an unopened bag of 2010 bai mu dan that somehow keeps moving to the front of the cabinet - maybe if I age it it'll taste better.

I'm dealing with a bit of a tea crisis today: too much tea, too little space. It's not just the usual suspects that are running out of space, but the jars of different herbs I use to make tisanes. So.....until there is a new tea center of some sort, I'm going to have to limit what stays in the main circulation more severely than usual. And that means one or two things I probably will never drink have just been set aside for composting. If I think someone I know would truly enjoy the tea, I will give it to that person, or put it out in the common area at work, but as often as not, if I can't make it tasty, it's worm food.

Today I was not able to get my act together sufficiently to get the worm bins over here, so with the moving in and sorting there's a bunch of stuff awaiting the moved and hopefully hungry worms.... I've been drinking more of my unknown puerh, because I'm dreading opening the tea boxes and having nowhere to put the tea. Auggh.....

Any teas that I have tried and hated have been gifted to other people. This trend will continue in the future.

Sometimes you find tea lovers in the most unsuspecting people. Young man of about 26 from our church went to Korea in 2004, and he loves their tea, and has an affinity for Chinese greens as well. He just got the rest of my 2012 Saejak (about 15g worth) one of the two samplers of hongcha I had gotten, and the rest of the 2012 Bi Luo Chun (about 20g).

Gonna have to put in a fairly large order of greens since I kicked the remainder of my supply while fighting off the plague (cold turned to bronchitis). For now, gonna go brew up some mystery hongcha. Hope everyone had a happy and safe Thanksgiving.

edit: did not hate the three teas mentioned above. In fact, I loved them immensely. Word flow didn't work very well, huh?

Other than just drinking teas I don't like - to try and see if I can find a way to make them better - I will just age them. Now, lightly roasted oolongs and whatnot? I toss them in the oven. It helps sometimes.

If tea is truly bad i sure would not like to give it to anyone, but if someone could enjoy it then give away.

Now cold season is starting, really nice time for hojicha, genmaicha and some taiwanese oolongs i still have.

Back to teachat, will visit frequently again :)

If it's something truly disgusting, like mishmashed mini-tuos, they get binned. As for the TenRen TGY I bought on impulse at a Taiwanese food fair...I think I'll keep it around in the original bag to give an occasional whiff. Sniffing the dry leaves alone still makes me nauseous. I wonder if it's pesticide? For $5.50 for 250g, it definitely isn't good TGY.

Usually I bring them to the office, where they do not have any competition from good teas.

If it is really undrinkable, I use them for the old trick to freshen up shoes with tea - I put the leaves in wet or smelly shoes overnight!
