Pu tastes different under different rel. humidity?

One of the intentionally aged teas, Pu-Erh has a loyal following.

Pu tastes different under different rel. humidity?

by apache » Jan 20th, '13, 14:35

In the last few days here in the UK turn very cold. My heating is up and relative humidity in my house has gone down from 60 - 70% to 40 - 50%. My puerh teas seem to taste much milder / bland than normal.

Am I imagining thing or some of you have similar experience? :?:

typical under my circumstances. Young puerh tends to taste weaker with especially fewer huigans during the winter.

I've noticed that as well as I've moved from California to Boston. Definitely lacking in the huigan department.

I think it's an air pressure/humidy thing, not how hot or cold the air is... No problems in the summer with air conditioning, for example...

The pu I'm drinking today is half aged sheng 2001 7432. It's almost like different tea. I will try it again when the weather is a bit warmer and humidity inside the house back to normal.

relative humidity also affects your sensitivity to smell a great deal, with drier air corresponding to weaker scents, and aroma has a large effect on taste.

The least romantic, but most universally understood occurrence of this phenomenon: farting in a hot shower.

Stay classy, teachat.

Maybe those of you in dryer climes could drink your pu in the bathroom with the shower running? :D

Don't you think that all this is more about humidity changes in your nose which affect the mucus or the sinuses than a humidity problem? I can't say it for shure, of course, but it looks logical to me that a dry air makes smells more accurate because humidity brings more smells than dry air. For example we know when it's going to rain because it smells rain (maybe it's a bad example lol).

I can read 40% RH here right now and i can tell you that this ZhiZheng LBZ '09 is a total gem, i need to review this soon!

Glad that you are having a great LBZ, but you might never know. If you were drinking this in a room at 95 % RH and 34C, you might not be in the most comfortable environment, but this cuppa might lead you on cloud nine.
