American oolong

I have not had the chance to try out any American oolong but recently I have tried a sample of oolong from New Zealand - it turned out to be surprisingly refined in taste and very similar to a high mountain oolong from Taiwan. So I guess the chances for the American oolong can't be too bad... providing the people who grew and processed it knew what they were doing :wink:

If that's your basis for comparison, then you're going to be disappointed. The plantation in NZ is run and staffed by Taiwanese tea professionals. From what I've heard, the WA farm is a guy who mainly grows berries and has a few acres of tea on a lark. That said, I have never tasted either, but I'm not ruling out buying either of them in the future to satisfy my curiosity.

Surprised no one has brought up the really amazing american-grown oolong from Hawaii yet in this thread. That, and a very local flavored white tea from the central coast, are the only american-grown teas I've had. The local tea was quite nice, but flavored and in teabags, so not my thing. The Hawaiian oolong is one of the best I've had.

Sorry for the late reply - only saw your question now. I got it from the TeeLaden in Germany. It used to be available on their website www.teagschwendner.com/DE/de/shop_edmon_s.TG?activeID=2236&parent_id= as well but apparently some evil people discovered that it was good stuff and nabbed it all. :oops:

The Taiwan Wen Shan Pouchong Tea is pretty decent as well - but of course this will not help you when you are in the US as they are apparently not allowed to send tea to the US and you are then restricted to the teas that they offer on their US website.

I've actually tried this tea! I bought a sample and was so upset I didn't buy more =) The tea had such a strong smell of cinnamon and was a little spicy. Definitely different than what I'm used to.
