Re: Amateur Hour ( Non Artisan Member Made pots and cups)
Reviving this thread, as this semesters schedule is far more conducive to night classes, so I just signed up for the Anagama class at Kalamazoo Institute of Arts. Rather excited I own a Yunomi by the Instructor which if I understand correctly is fired in the same kiln my pieces will be fired.
I hope I can really work on my throwing skills. Also looking forward to having my pieces fired in a traditional Japanese style Kiln.

These are half way through being formed for the bisque firing. I should take a picture of some that are nearly ready for bisque firing to show you how I've been approaching these. Yes the feet look incredibly blocky ( intentionally), because once the clay dries a bit I carve the heck out of them to give them a nice Koudai.

Thanksforposting in ask the artisan section.
I'm new to pottery and tea ware/ tea
I'm still, working the wheel. But I am fascinated and have built a few non wheel built bowls I'm sure the experience in diverse building techniques helps.
Is there a name for hand built pieces that are carved from block of clay?
Combo pinched carved, coil then finished on banding wheel?
I saw on your blog the wood fired pieces. I'm so jealous.
I'd volunteer to stoke the flame if there was a wood kiln close to me.

It's a recent yunomi. I really love the glaze. New one for me. Im going to reformulate glaze for less gloss. But this one is permanent my palette of glazes.
I phone is so wide angle It distorts. But better idea than pics
Glaze is crackled? And some sparkly crystals that don't show in video.
Great runs and drips.
The enso symbol has a dragon like or some say fish like image.....is red iron oxide
Opposite is single line, black slip
It's approx 4.5 inch by 2.7 inch
A Chawan ....

I promised more photos. I should say that the bone try tea tray did not survive the night ( snapped in my hand moving it from place to place).

This is missing two teabowls. Which I did not take out of the damp room for this photo.
Oh and feetsies-- ( I think I am developing a love for a well formed koudai).

Nice feet.
I saw the carved gunomi on earlier post . Very nice!! Ans super cool that you got the wood fired!!
I love the look of the carved pieces especially when it looks like it was hewn from rock, which yours do.
Every time I try, They just feel super heavy. How do you get them to balance rugged looks with balanced weight?
Too bad you can't change title to ... Soon to be artisans...

Very nice! You can shape a lump of clay to the form that you like, then scoop out the middle. This is one way that chawan are made. I recently went on a bender making them like that. There are some advantages in that it is well supported while you do the shaping, but you have to have a steady hand if you want it thin. (link to pic of such a pot in the process, as not to hijack the thread)

the trick with that method would be to keep it lightweight.... I could see that being very challenging!
Speaking of challenges, I'm taking a class in a few weeks!
I've worked with clay before, but what I'd like to do is try to produce a bowl that looks like it was turned on a wheel, but in fact was shaped by hand. See how deceptive I can be.

I haven't made a thin tea tray, but I often make large thin flat pieces to use in mosaics. I dry them between bats (I think that's the name - they're boards) and I usually fire them in bisque trays so they don't break going in to the kiln.AdamMY wrote:I promised more photos. My kingdom for a teaboat like this!AdamMY wrote:

This piece turned out better than I expected while I am still struggling with glazes, by keeping it simple with just two dips into Celadon, this piece is great.

This is another piece whose form I made the very first day of class, and because he was encouraging us to add some texture or design I took a plastic fork and did arches around the piece over lapping like this.
