Real or Fake Factory 1 Yixing?

by dim_aa » Feb 26th, '13, 00:19

I found this teapot for a very reasonable price. Even if it isn't real factory 1 product, the loss is not substantial. I just want to try to identify this teapot.

From seller description:
This teapot is 100% hand-made on or before 1990. This teapot is made by the technologists at the Chinese YiXing ZiSha—Plant One...This material is 100% toxic free and is completely safe to drink from. With its natural mineral colors, different types of ZiSha clay are used for different teapot colors, no pigment added for coloring...
Material: Red Purple Clay
Mark on the bottom: Meng Cheng
Year Obtained: 1990
Volume: 80 ml / 2.7 oz
This teapot has no filter

Is any of these claims are true?

I googled the description. Do you really think Factory 1 pots sell on eBay for $6.90? Come on dim_aa, I know you're new to this, but don't waste our time buddy.

Well I got attracted mainly by the size, which actually even smaller - 65ml, than by factory 1 fact. It is so tiny, that I couldn't resist. Plus some tuition has to be paid. And sorry for wasting your time guys

The clay and style seems not from Factory 1 in the earlier era, unless it was special edition and they strayed from the norm...

Real or fake, factory 1 or 5, ...for $6.99 I think it will make a nice bonsai pot... :)

None of the claims are true, however, we don't buy based on vendor claims, right? Here is my hands on review.

A friend of mine bought one of these and my first thoughts were not dissimilar to the above posters. However, a few minutes later my friend brewed a tea for me that I know very well in the pot. The low firing is ugly, and the pot isn't worth a penny as a collectible. But it brought out another side of the tea than I've had before. I bought one for the office, it makes pretty short work of cheaper Yancha that ends up in my office drawer. Bitterness and burnt tastes down, fruity tastes up. Was worth the few dollars to me, given the 80 and 50ml sizes I was able to guiltlessly leave in my office. I don't exactly miss them at home :)

Did not attempt to use these pots without hours of boiling and an all day soak in tea leaves. You shouldn't either.

I would be cautious with people selling both teapots and this kind of items in the same store...

Don't judge too hastily David. I'm pretty sure that's an authentic Factory 1 iPhone case. :)

I bought (after seeing this post) the 40ml version of this pot. It works really well.

I'll post a review later. It needed to be cleaned quite a bit to get it ready (boiled in tea for a few hours)

It's been a good way to see if I like the small size without having to spend 100+.

I don't pay much attention to claims of age from sellers on ebay.

I think it's a fair pot for the price. It even seems to respond to being brushed with tea (developing patina slowly)

Frankly I'm glad I found out about it. Finding a simple unglazed teapot under 50ml and for less than $120 was really hard!

I'm still waiting to be convinced that the $120 version of this 40ml pot made of yixing clay is worth it. I do think such post look a little nicer some of the time, the clay has more character, such as flecks and spots, and they have a skin-like balance between shininess and matte finish that is appealing. They also have signs of more careful craftsmanship. (when you pour this pot if you tilt it too slowly it will drip at first) --

But beyond that what makes it worth 10X as much? (not snark, I'm willing to be convinced if there is something)

In the mean time I'm getting more out of my tea using a smaller pot. Very happy with this genuine fake.

Futurebird, there's really no comparison. This pot, as Brandon said, has absolutely no collector value. I don't think it will ever develop a nice patina. That said, its a practical little thing.

Image

This is after using one of them for a few weeks. To my eye it's noticeably darker. (wish I had a better camera) --

what properties are required for a surface to age? a combination of smoothness and poorness would seem to be the main one.

We'll see how this pot looks in a year.

The small one might do better than the large one. We'll see.

EDIT: You should also note that the little one starts off darker than the big one.
