Big tea bowls

by yalokinh » Mar 28th, '13, 14:02

I've seen some pretty decent sized chawans, and then I see the huge ones.
are those used for the same thing?
Thanks

The "typical" (if there is such a beast) chawan is about 13 cm in diameter and about 9 cm high. There are a lso slightly smaller "traveler's chawan".... and summer bowls sometimes are about 15 cm at the flaring rim.

Sometimes a slightly larger one is selected for koicha (thick tea) when there are many guests.....since all share one bowl of tea.

Hope that idea helps.

best,
