I don't think you can get "real" gyokuro for under $30. I've tasted stuff in the next price bracket up that was questionable and tasted like Kabuse too.

I got some from Horaido in Kyoto for about $25 for 100g and I'm drinking it now. It's very good and brews a bit easier than the high end stuff I got from Ippodo.

I also got some kukicha made from gyokuro when I was in Kyoto and it's an affordable alternative. It's not the same, obviously, but you can get a nice umami flavor for casual everyday drinking.

I wanted to get that mecha from Ippodo. Is it worth it? I was thinking of saving my pennies and doing an order this summer once I'm done with my stash of matcha (I also didn't check if the NYC store was carrying it, but I don't think so).

My all time favorite gyokuro is under $30 although I don't have much experience with gyokuro (I drink mostly Chinese teas). It is the gyokuro karigane from Itohkyuemon while on vacation in Uji. I paid 1,575 JPY for 100g.

Yamashita's stuff is no joke. The "jirushi" is a good bottom level gyokuro in my opinion. It's around $20 per 50 grams right now. It still gives a good, thick mouthfeel and flavor. It was the star of our latest OTTI.

Going to 40 USD per 100 grams makes a HUGE difference, IMHO. There are good ones for less, but they are typically not what I am in the market for in Gyokuro.

Yamashita Jirushi, +1! This is also a great price considering that it was around 50 USD only months ago (caution, Yen falling zone) when I was purchasing for the Gyokuro OTTI!

I would add the two similarly priced offerings from O-Cha, Gyoku-Hou and Fujitsubo. Again, these were right around 50 bucks 4ish months ago, now with the Yen falling, they are also right around 40 USD. These offerings are quite different than Jirushi. So, if you want to try different tasting Gyokuro, buy a few selections.

Now would be a good time to go bargain hunting from vendors selling in Yen! :!:

How about ippodo's Rimpo 50g Bag ?
I just notich that hibik's Premium Gyokuro is down to 30$, i yet to find a better Gyokuro even duo i put upon myself to find a better Gyokuro in the same price range, i have yet to find one.
I think i can't resiest but to buy it with the Yunomi cups i put my eye on for some time now.

So what are you looking in a Gyokuro ?
My number one priority is the relaxed feeling wich you get in the most umai tea .
