I hope it goes well for them. Its says they should be able to produce tea next year!
And they are growing their plants from seeds, this makes me very happy, as I too am growing my own from seeds. And trying oh, so hard to be patient. But it is fun to watch my babies grow up and I will appreciate them more since I took the harder route.

Very interesting for sure, especially since the climate is far from tropical, very northerly inline with Saporo, Japan. Cold.

A few cultivars of Chinese/tawain do well in colder climates.

That is a pretty nice little article that is worth a second read.

As for the tea growers, I wish them the best of luck and hope they are willing to use new technology to their advantage. It is no small thing to make tea in the US so good luck to them.

Wow, growing tea bushes from seed in a temperate environment with cold winters? This sounds like quite the challenge to me. Best of luck to them. :)

Indoor or outdoor? :o
When I lived in CNY, during winter, I spent 0.5 hour daily averagely digging out my car from the snow
The coldest tea growing zones I know of are in Shanxi and Shandong with warmer regional climates than the rest of their provinces, only slightly colder than where they grow tea in South Carolina.

Yeah, this seems astounding, amazing, unbelievable! I am going to assume they have the experience and have done their homework on the local climate.

Good luck to them! If tea can grow there, then a lot of the USA is fair game.

I believe there are some Korean cultivars that are fairly cold hardy. Regardless it seems like bushes would have to be pruned back and covered during the winter months.

Having lived in Ithaca for 7 years, "winter months" means from October to May.

Jokes aside, I hope it turns out well for them!

Where there is a will there is a way. Saw this new wine region in northern china in the seattle film festival's screening of 'Red Obsession' ( great movie btw if you are interested in wine and china ).

I'm going up in September when they open. The tea plantation is actually in waterloo which is about 45 min north of Ithaca. I am hoping they will need help in the picking season next year.
