by beforewisdom » Jun 24th, '13, 16:36

A new startup, Zest, is specializing in making high caffeine tea blends. Some of their black teas have more caffeine than coffee.

Interesting. Similar concept as an energy drink, but applied to tea. I'd rather have mate than a flavored tea though. My personal opinion

Terrifying. I can only assume that they are treated with added caffeine, given that all the flavor adulterants are not caffeinated. Then again, I've heard that plantation tea tends to have higher caffeine for some reason. Just brew good tea stronger, man.

I emailed them and asked them how they got the higher caffeine content:
"We add a highly caffeinated tea extract to the blend in a very precise manner. "
I guess I can just drink a second cup, or do what I do now when I need an extra lift and just use more tea in a tall beer mug with more water.

... that just sounds really scary. I just imagine people ODing on the caffeine due to misapplied caffeine extract.

Just too many things to go wrong ...
