White elegant hohin, but where?

Postby AygoR » Oct 22nd, '13, 12:11

Hi, can anyone recommend a good place for me to acquire a good quality hob in tea pot? I am in the UK, and EU based shops are preferred.
I already own a hobin which I bought online, but it is of mediocre quality. It doesn't pour right and the lid is not flush...
I am looking for a white hobin, such as the one in the picture.

I dearly hope that someone here can help :)

I cannot speak for the UK based shops, but O-Cha, Maiko and others carry this simple design, porcelain style Houhin.

... and welcome to TeaChat. Please feel free to introduce yourself under Introductions.

Thanks Chip, I feel warmly welcomed.
Can you please give me links for shops you mentioned + the 'others'?

For starters ...

These are pretty reasonably priced, but then you will also find the high end ones out there as well though I have not shopped for one in a long time.

Do you prefer the simple white porcelain look?

In Houhin (spelled several ways) there are a lot of different styles and materials and glazes and non glazes available. I usually prefer clay, sometimes glazed and sometimes not. Hagi-Yaki and Bizen-Yaki are personal faves ... along with Western teaware artisans who are on the forum such as Petr and Shawn. ... oh and Korean ...

But this is just barely prying open the door of this Pandora's box that may fly open never to be closed again!

I was very certain about the white porcelain look until now, haha.
I've seen some of the Hagi-Yaki style wares, they still intimidate me for now. I definitely want a glazed pot to allow for audacious experimentation I won't have to regret. Can you share some good resources for Hagi-Yaki, I may just not have seen a big enough selection.
I like where this is going

This white houhin is still available on Andrzej Bero's blog/page for $100pln which amounts to about $33 U.S. dollars:

Many of Andrzej Bero's piece are often done in white glaze. I know you're looking for a houhin, but until just recently he had a very nice white shiboridashi tea set as well:

I really like this one for an elegant, white houhin; though it's from Andrzej's "houhin/shibo sold" folder:

Since Chip mentioned hagi, here is this one from Artistic Nippon in Japan:

Here are these commercial houhin from Tea Trekker:
