What yixing do you use for Yancha

Postby gasninja » Nov 29th, '13, 10:09

I know that I am not alone in my problem Finding a pot to perfectly complement Yancha.
For heavily roasted teas I will sacrafice high notes for the excellent mouthfeel provided by my Luni Bian Hu.

which looks way sexier after having lot of yancha poured from it.

For light to medium roasted yancha I was sacrificing mouth-feel to keep the high notes. With a 90s hong ni pot which preserved high notes but it did the mouthfeel would suffer for it. This was not the happiest of compromises, but it was passable. Unfortunately this week the most slight of tea table mishaps ended up with my pot missing a handle leaving a hole in the side.
I am now looking for a good yancha pot I know this is as if not more rare than good yancha. Just curious what people more experienced in the art of Yixing pairing have choosen to mate there Yancha with.

Sorry to hear about the damage gasninja. :( It's happened to the best of us. How many pieces did the handle and pot break into? JB Weld to the rescue, perhaps? Either way, please don't throw the pot away! It can likely be repaired.

Here are my yancha pots...

70ml, young yancha for 1-2 people...

70ml, aged yancha for 1-2 people...

Image

120ml, any yancha for more than 2 people (or if I'm particularly thirsty!)

My two favorite Yancha teapots are an 80ml 80's sandy Hongni Yixing

and an unglazed porcelain 120ml teapot from Seong il. However, some lighter roasts do better in a gaiwan as sometimes the pot swallows the aroma and fruit of the tea. The difference can be significant.

I would choose the middle teapot of TJ's selection.

80s Factory-1? Got a seal? (if it's F1)

That's one good DC/SX pot :)

This is my current yancha pot: Image

It is a modern pot, pretty sandy, about 70ml.

The handle is in two pieces but it left a hole in the body of the pot. I am nervous about direct contact of jb weld and hot water that I intend to drink let alone the effect it will have on the tea.

I dunno if it's from early-80s or late-80s (there's a difference between 2 periods). But at scanning it looks those superior Factory-1 clay.

80ml Shi-piao Hongni Tiao-sha are PERFECT to do Gongfu with Yancha I'd say

This pot is in not my favourite clay for yancha but I like the shape and the spout. Can control the brew to minute level. For yancha, every miliseconds count and this pot has the ability to perform. I wish it is in Zhuni though. I have a few other pots dedicated for Yancha.
