NEW! Official Teaware of the Day!
Today my tea ware them was tabacobon, I recently got this one and I think it looks nice. A tabacobon is the first gesture of hospitality put forth at a tea gathering. It lets guests know they are being considered from the start.

the ceramic container is a hi-ire, it contains ash and a burning piece of charcoal, it is used for lighting a traditional Japanese tobacco pipe, the bamboo cylinder has a small amount of water in it and is used to tap the ashes into. alongside these items you will often also see a "kiseru", or Japanese pipe and a "tabako-ire", a small container holding the tobacco.debunix wrote:What are the containers in the taobaocon holding--incense, water, candles...?

Re: NEW! Official Teaware of the Day!
it does seem a little strange considering chado is all about tea, but these items are considered aesthetically indispensable to any tea gathering, and make an appearance of no less than three times at a standard chaji. At larger chakai they are always represented and admired along with things like chawan, chashaku, and natsume, as well as being appreciated as objects of art they are also a symbol to guests that they are in a welcoming atmosphere and the host has prepared for their every need.
(note: no one would actually use these to smoke with, they are for aesthetic admiration only.)

now, how does one feel a welcoming atmosphere when presented with a smoking set, but not supposed to smoke? is that a way of torturing smokers?blairswhitaker wrote:it does seem a little strange considering chado is all about tea, but these items are considered aesthetically indispensable to any tea gathering, and make an appearance of no less than three times at a standard chaji. Cha-no-yu is dance, your dance partners next step is to restrain from accepting the offering to smoke, otherwise they risk stepping on the hosts feet so to speak.

Hot chocolate and gyukuro in cups by Shawn McGuire’s Greenwood Studio, prepping the gyokuro in a little celadon shiboridashi also by Shawn. Mmmm....chocolate and gyokuro. So nice to play these off each other.

Wow! Looks lovely, i never got one of those cups with ear but i did receive 2 vases (and a pet) 2 weeks ago from Shawn, and they totally blew my mind. I can only imagine how nice the cups are when holding them.

I know.. I've been keeping an eye on etsy lately. And totally blew my budget for the next month^^
The second one looks really elegant with the small foot.

Re: NEW! Official Teaware of the Day!
One lovely part of using some of my Shyrabbit teawares is the beautiful reflections around the rim of the cup--subtly reflective gloss that gives a metallic look. It's very difficult to capture on film, because so much of the interest is in the play of light, but today's attempt comes closer than most...
