Re: Today's MatchaWan :D (new name, but tea's the same)
Here is an exhibition of Teabowls in Oxford, UK that began today. Even Yamane Seigan is showing there.

Some amazing bowls there! Would like to go and take a look but oxford's not all that convenient for me.
Re: Today's MatchaWan :D (new name, but tea's the same)
I love the 3 bowls by by Camille Virot, the bowls by Chuck Schwartz, and the really rough pieces by Charles Bound near the beginning! The Seigan stuff is beautiful as well. I wish I could see them in person! Thanks for sharing that link!Tead Off wrote:Here is an exhibition of Teabowls in Oxford, UK that began today. Even Yamane Seigan is showing there.

I also thought many of the bowls quite lovely and some of the glazing techniques were really spectacular.
I've looked at the Seigan chawan for years. I like his yunomi/guinomi very much, but I just can't get past the clunky look of his thick, white chawan. That style of foot takes away a lot of elegance for me. I like yunomi with this treatment, though.

At the end of the clip sensei pauses for a moment to reflect, and goes right back to piling her tea mountain higher.

Today's MatchaWan :D (new name, but tea's the same)
This is a raku bowl made by the ninth generation raku, Ryonyu (1756-1834).
Sadly I was only able to handle this gem, but did not get to enjoy any matcha out of it.

here is something else interesting and matcha related, an ivory chashaku carved to look like a feather,

How did it feel in the hand? Light? Sturdy? Slick? A little rough?
Just curious, and a wee bit envious. Gorgeous thing.
(And some extra photos slipped in while I was posting--I was referring to the chawan. Hadn't seen the lovely ivory piece.)

It was pretty light, felt a bit slick, the body it's self was kinda bumpy and had a freeform feeling to it, the glaze was very smooth for the most part and had slick feeling to it.
