Sending tea out of tins?
I'm planning on sending someone tea but I have no empty tins adavlible to send them in. How should I ship it? I wast thinking of sending then in plastic sandwhich bags in evelopes and then the evelopes in a box. Any suggestions?
Hummm you may be right. Maybe inside a paper envelope, then in a baggie? If no tins are available.Fukamushi Dynasty wrote:I personally believe that plastic bags affect the taste of the teas transported within them. Either by imparting an odd "fresh plastic" flavor, or by pulling flavor out of the leaf.

I would guess regular paper to be just as bad. Wax or parchment paper inside a plastic baggie, maybe?

I am also leery of sandwich bags, but for blacks, most oolongs, and puerh and if it's just for a few days, I don't think they are likely to alter the taste or aroma. For delicate, unflavored greens I would tremble before consigning them to a sandwich bag. Upton Tea sells some paper-lined foil bags that would meet the need, and you can also buy empty sample tins from them. I would also worry about putting those greens into any previously used tin unless it had been subjected to herculean cleaning efforts.
Tins are cool, but mylar bags are convenient and don't have a lot of the draw backs of ziploc bags. The ones treated with foil on both sides are pretty light-tight too. If you're looking at giving out a lot of samples over a period of time, I'd suggest those. They're easier to store than a bunch of empty tins too.
Here's a site that will let you order approx 1 oz sized bags in quantities under commercial-sized orders. 100 1 oz bags will run you about $20.
