how to justify the high cost of quality teas to GF/SO/Wify?

by inspectoring » Feb 18th, '08, 04:56

I think this is going to be the most creative post of all time....
I can't seem to justify 15 $ / 1oz from ito-en gyokuro to my SO.....
she thinks I paid 15 $ for 1 lb of gyokuro... :)

how do you guys do it?

How Marie Antoinette, olivierco!

The advice sounds reasonable, though. If I think any of my friends or family would raise an eyebrow as to the price I paid for something, I'd have them drink it first. If they liked it, the real price might come up in conversation. If not...well, I lie. I lie a lot.

My wife and I agreed on how much a week I can spend on tea, so whatever I do with that is my business.

It does help if the SO is at least a little open-minded.

Gyokuro is very expenisve, so that's challenging, but you can break it down to a per cup cost. Its one thing to say this tea is a $100 lb, and another to say this cup costs less than a can of coke.

People think I'm crazy. But everyone has their own little thing they spend too much money on. Be it clothes, jewelry, home audio, computers, etc.

Instead of defending myself, I have my mind set on getting my family to buy more expensive tea!

That's a good question. My SO is becoming, shall we say, "curious" about the amount of tea I am buying, the # of adagio tins I have stacked up in the "tea cabinet", and what it all costs.

I have a few thoughts on the matter:

1) Tea makes you happy, and therefore you can't put a price on happiness!

2) Having a daily Starbucks/fancy coffee drink habit is more expensive than a daily tea habit

3) Tea is good for you, so you're saving money in the long run from not having expensive doctor bills (okay, this one's a bit of a reach...)

4) Tea can be viewed as a hobby/passion, and many hobbies cost money

That all being said.... isn't gyokuro traditionally used in Japan for special occassions only, and not as an every day tea...?

Yeah, pretty much. Sencha is the mainstay tea. And then you can also consider the Kukicha/bancha/etc route for even cheaper tea.

I guess that's a benefit of being single. Nobody to justify expenses to aside from yourself.

As I keep looking at the OP I keep thinking of some way for him to get some cheap sencha and try to pass it off as his 1 lb of gyo, but even a pound of cheap sencha is going to cost like 15 bucks.

Bwahahahahaha!!!!! Awesome!

Seriously, buy your wife a nice expensive something she wants. Then, the tea doesn't matter.

Or you could say it's cheaper than crack. Oh, Gyokuro? Maybe not

Ummm, tell her nothing, store all your tea in Lipton boxes. She/he may get suspicious when you store a lot of Lipton boxes in the fridge.

Idea number 2...keep your SO boozed on cheap whiskey.

Wow...I knew this was going to be funny....

I just gave her some old green tea I was going to throw away and she hated it. Then I asked her to try another one....Gyokuro - and right away she LOVED IT @!....she has tried a lot of my tea selection but her reaction has never been this strong....however after the praises the first thing she said was - something that tastes so good HAS to be expensive... :)

I do agree though...if it costs about a 1$ a cup....its not too bad...

Ah, two of the things I love the most about my husband are a) that he is a computer geek, which is a way more expensive habit and that b) he really does not care if I spend money on hobbies (with in reason, and his definition of reasonable is pretty liberal. )

And, as Sky said, it's cheaper and better for you then crack! (though, admittedly, I usually go with heroin)
