Can expired matcha be of any use?

Made from leaves that have not been oxidized.

Can expired matcha be of any use?

by gingkoseto » Aug 6th, '09, 15:52

I am not a matcha drinker. All I know about matcha is it has very short shelf life :P

A friend gave me a small can of matcha in a sealed paper can. I didn't open it but saw the can labeled "expires in 平成16年“. Through google, I've learned that 平成16年 is 2004  Should I keep it sealed as a souvenir?

It seems to be a wise solution.

... or poison your enemies with it ...

You could try it in some food type recipes, but 5 years past expiration, I would not hold out much hope.

If you can to be more creative with it, you can probably use it in art crafts or something like that...if you ever need to make a greenish paste, well there you go! Maybe the expiration date is only good if it's opened. If you're bold enough, maybe you can try some, and if it's still good you can use it in ice cream or something...

Actually, don't do it, keep it as a souvenir...I don't want anyone to sue me for suggesting something potentially dangerous.

Since I didn't open the pack, I don't know if it still green, or just some yellow powder

 Matcha powder sticks to anything, including skin, save it for Halloween and go green(ish).

Yeah, aged matcha might be the next fad ^^

I wouldn't hesitate to mix it with ice cream though. =)

There might be a consideration of bacteria build up, so I would perhaps check with a trusted matcha vendor and see what they say.
Many expirations on 'food' items do not only pertain to quality of flavor, but also to safety/bacteria. Almost all expiration dates on consumables take the time it takes for resident bacteria to multiply to less than safe numbers into account, but I don't know if this applies for matcha.

Interesting notion. There is moisture present in all tea leaf, so bacteria could possibly gain a foothold?

I always figured the color fade and diminished flavor was due to oxidation.

Haha, that's hilarious, but sadly- I'm sure someone, somewhere has probably already tried that. I have some REALLY old Twinnings bags in the cabinet. I should try my luck at selling "aged" Twinnings.

I have several sealed Matcha tins that expired in 2017. I've kept them to use as part of face masks.
