Yerba: Best Sources?

Postby Katrina » Apr 26th, '08, 15:09

I know this has been asked before but many of the posts in this thread are 2 or more years old.

My husband recently tried and loved roasted mate. Anyone have recommendations or sources? We will be brewing it in a teapot. (Just can't invest in more equipment in case this is a brief phase! Sorry to all you Argentinians out there!)

I know next to NOTHING about mate. I know he liked the roasted rather than the green and it was unflavored. (A real smoky/tobacco kind of note...reminded me a bit of pipe smoke.) Are there other questions I should be asking when trying to select a good one?

not sure of roasted yerba sources/brands but my argentine friend who lived in Argentina & Paraguay is here and buys only the Cruz de Malta brand (unroasted kinds)...

One of the other TeaChat'ers turned me on to these guys for a replacement gourd and bombilla, and I have had no complaints. They seem to have a fairly wide range of drinkable offerings.

My favorite is Rosamonte Special Selection. It's a strong, smoky one also.

Roasted mate seems to pop up more on non-yerba vendor sites than yerba vendor sites. The only one I found so far is http://www.yerbamatecafe.biz/Salante-Yerba-mate-s/2.htm . The gimmicky products sold on that site are annoying, but they are a good place to order mate from.
