Can you drink too much tea?

by love4god » Nov 14th, '05, 15:40

I just got my very first adagio sampler and ingenuiTEA yesterday. We got home from a weekend in the mountains (now I wish I ordered a bit earlier) and my package was waiting. About 7pm I made my first cup of Irish Breakfast and WOW. I mean seriously, I couldn't believe how good it was. I have been drinking gruel my entire life compared to this stuff.

Anyway, I drank four cups (one of each type from my sampler) before bed last night. I've had another few cups today and there is no end in sight. I am currently drinking my first iced tea using my stash...errr... I mean my new tea and it's so good.

I read the whole book last night and I'm afraid I have a bit of an addiction brewing (pun intended).

Serious question though, can too much tea be bad? Caffeine? I've read it's a diuretic?

Thanks
lg

moderation

It's very exciting to hear that you enjoy your new oder! I just love the ingenuiTEA!

I find that tea can be a potent diuretic which is why I have to pace myself. The best rule is moderation.

Caffeine does act as a diuretic. If I have more than four or five cups in a day, I get a stomachache. If that's not a problem for you, then drink up!

Tea should be incapable of doing any harm. But, of course, your body may react to it in different way. Some people respond to caffeine adversely, and if that's you, then stay within your comfort range. It is a diuretic, but as long as you're keeping hydrated (uh, tea is mostly water, so it's a given), then you pee a lot, so what? :D I seem to be made of steel or something. I can have as much sugar, caffeine, anything, even before bed time, and feel no different. Hence, coca tea is my picker-upper, and even that is barely noticeable. It's really a disadvantage, though.

I'd say its only a disadvantage if you drink tea primairly for the caffeine. If you drink tea first because you love it, then consider yourself blessed as there are lots of us that envy your ability to drink tea uptill bedtime and then still be able to sleep.

A morning stimulant would be a good thing, and if caffeine had much affect on me, I would certainly brew a morning pot for that benefit alone. I don't know if caffeine has ever affected me or if that's a development from my "unhealthy days" where coca cola was my mainstay and I was drinking many cans of the stuff per day. Still like it a lot, but I only ever drink coke now for lunch. On the other hand, I'll never be destructively dependent on caffeine, so I guess that's a good thing.

Too much tea

by Henry James (Brisbane) » Jan 2nd, '06, 02:17

Well, I love it and always drink caffeine free Dilmah, from the teabag (brew for 3 minutes). I add 1 spoon of sugar and skim milk. It's great and I can drink over 10 cups a day, no problems. Is this a medical risk?

Ok, sorry for the all caps, but I'm starting to get tired of people asking health questions.

no. you cannot drink too much tea. =D
There are four advantages to green tea... Its beauty, its taste, its aroma, and its health benefits. Learn to enjoy the first three and you'll forget you drank it for the fourth. ^^

too much tea?

by Kestrel » Feb 3rd, '06, 00:21

The only way you can have too much tea is if it starts flowing out your eyes while you're drinking your newest cup.

Personally, I drink nothing but tea. Really. The last time I drank anything else was over a week ago, and only because movie theaters don't serve tea, so I had bottled water instead. I go through about 2 quarts of iced tea a day by myself (more if I exercise), plus whatever hot tea I consume. That's how I've lived for 7 years now. Back in high school I started drinking tea because I was getting sick of buying a liter of Dr. Pepper every morning, so I brought a liter of tea with me every day. After about a month and a half, I found out I didn't enjoy soda anymore. It tasted too sweet, too syrupy, and didn't actually relieve thirst. Since then, I've drank almost nothing but tea. Literally. If I can't get tea, I literally won't drink anything. To the point of not drinking anything for upwards of 16 hours straight. My friends in high school (and my friends now) swear up and down that if you cut me, I'll bleed tea instead of blood.

I am perfectly healthy (aside from vicious allergies, which I find alleviated by a good cup of Assam or Yunnan Gold) and I have no difficulty sleeping. I would dare to wager that I am far healthier for all my tea drinking than I would be if I were still drinking Dr. Pepper every morning (and I'm sure my teeth are much happier, too).

You can only be drinking too much tea when it starts flowing out your eyes as you drink more. :D

That soda story reminded me of my old highschool love of mountain dew which i drank every morning as well, but also all day long pretty much. Thankfully tea as also saved me from that. But instead of drinking nothing but tea, you should try drinking juice, especially fresh sqeezed juice not from just fruits, but veggies too. I find juice to be more energizing than tea. IDK, just saying juices are good too.

People have died from caffeine overdose, but I think that resulted from mixing massive amounts of coffee with caffeine pills. I don't think you can drink too much tea, your body will give you clear signs that you are overdosing on caffeine and you won't want to be drinking anymore once you start to feel them.

Good point, if anything I'd say that it would be more practical to kill oneself from water poisoning by drinking too much tea but even that is getting a bit extreme as I don't think anyone here is in danger of drinking that much tea in a short period of time. At the same time within reason its nothing to worry about as most water poisoning deaths are the result of hazing.
