I typically drink the superior or premium gyokuru from www.hibiki-an.com. o-cha.com also has a good selection.
Re: theanine high
I have noticed it after drinking all kinds of teas. It's one of my favorite things about tea. I can get a decent theanine buzz off of just about any tea. I thought it was the caffeine at first but then I reasoned that I've been drinking vast quantities of caffeinated soda for many years and never got any kind of real buzz off of that. Coffee either. The sad part is that it doesn't really last long and it's very gentle. I have anxiety issues so anything that calms me down is something I really notice immediately.ryan wrote:Anyone else get a nice relaxed and calming feeling after drinking gyokuru??? I know that it isn't placebo effect in my case because I noticed it before I read any literature about it. I find the theanine "high" from most green teas to be more profound than that of most black teas. Although I have had some very potent ones from black teas.
Glad this topic is getting some traffic!
I also suffer from anxiety as well which may be why tea has a more dramatic effect on me than other people I have shared tea with. I haven't noticed the effect with anything other than green tea but its possible that is because I drink good quality green but cheap everything else. =)

Oddly, I have tried theanine supplements and it just doesn't have the same effect. Although it could have just been the brand. This leads me to think it might be the combination of theanine and caffeine or there may be other compounds in tea that either intensify the theanine effect or have an effect of their own.

Or it could be tea in its entirety. It is more than simply a list of compounds.Love4TheLeaf wrote:Oddly, I have tried theanine supplements and it just doesn't have the same effect.
