Scented/flavored Pu?

One of the intentionally aged teas, Pu-Erh has a loyal following.

Scented/flavored Pu?

by omegapd » Oct 26th, '08, 06:59

Hey All,

Just curious if anyone has tried or even liked any of the scented/flavored shu out there (is any sheng flavored? I've never seen any)?

Victoria sent me some rose scented shu tuo-chas the other day that aren't bad and I've tried one of the tangerine wrapped ones from Salsero that I liked a lot.

Any comments or recommendations to try anything else?

EW

I thought it was so good, I sent it ALL to you!

Those orange/tangerine wrapped ones look so intriguing.
Of curse so did the rose.

Lupicia has "Puerh Cafe" or coffee flavored shu. Steer far away.

So far, I have found mini tuos to be the most scented of the puerh genre. Of the ones i have tried, the nuomi or glutinous rice flavour ones are my favorite. There are ones scented with jasmine, rose, chrysanthemum, and sanqi. Some of these flavours are made with both sheng and shu. While others are with either. YSLLC has a decent spread.

I personally like the pink wrapper nuomi sheng mini tuo. It is of premium quality and you do get real puerh leaves inside. For some the leaves are chopped up and i am not even sure of they are puerh leaves. If you come across mini tuos that float as soon as you add water, be careful. Not sure if you are drinking puerh.

Chrysanthemum with ripe is also a traditional favorite (kok poh)when we eat dim sum.

Haiwan makes some shu rose scented minis that pot brew in a 2 liter thermos about perfectly.
I ave had jasmine scented sheng minis that I be believe were their product that were also pretty good.

as you can see, this wonderful cake that i am drinking, photo courtesy of yunnan sourcing, contains small camellia flowers. the flowers themselves don't really overpower the taste of the pu erh tea itself. looks nice though. this cake is a 2004 vintage. just to let you guys know.

Wow how sweet of you! Thanks! As you know I dabble a little in pu-erh, but I don't think I'm going to be converted. I find it much easier to order something that someone else recommends and has tried than venturing out on my own. Mostly loose sheng falls closer to my comfort zone. I have had both sheng and shu that I really enjoyed. But, I've yet to find a beng that I can commit to.

Awhile back, earlier this year, there was a beautiful, and quite expensive, large golden colored beng that caught several people's attention. It may have been from silver needle, but I can't remember. If I could find that one now, I'd probably buy it. I asked Sal but he doesn't remember it. But I remember several people here made a big deal over it. It was before you joined us. If anyone remembers please let me know!

As for me as of late, I am just now getting to some of the samples I bought from
YS on your recommend. Just had one so far. I'm pacing myself! Ha! Actually cooler weather is making me think pu-erh.
:)

hey vic.

i just love that tea. that's all i have to say about it. smells good, the brew is not bitter. the camellia flower does not overpower the pu erh tea one bit but yet it is still lingering in the background, a faint trail of it. no regrets in gettin this cake.
