camphor

by puerhking » Nov 9th, '08, 16:53

since many people....including myself.....think that camphor is a pleasant flavor in pu, I was wondering what ones you guys have come across that express that note most prominently. for me it is this one...

tho mine is the imperfectly compressed version which per Scott will age more quickly.

I don't have an answer to your question, but I found a 2006 review of this cake (sourced from TeaSpring) by BearsBearsBears.

Doesn't camphor have a sort of Vicks Vapo Rub aroma?

kinda like moth balls?

a very popular thing to do still, to throw in some moth balls into the closet. once in a while when i am walking around the city, i will detect a whiff of this wonderful fragrance from someone's jacket.

vicks? so no, i have not detected this elusive camphor smell yet in my pu erh tea.

Surprisingly, I've found one shu that had a subtle camphor/menthol aroma and taste. It's Upton's China Classic. Its also turned out to be my favorite shu...

I seem vaguely to remember finding a wonderful camphor taste/aroma in one or two of the very first sheng I ever tried, but what they were and precise memories of the taste are both lost bits of information. I would love to find one that has a distinctive camphor taste now.

as per scott,
he said this has a slight camphor flavor,
he sent this little baby in with a package to me for free and i enjoyed this more than the stuff i ordered...

i like it a lot, and ordered this along with stuff for my second batch of tea from him

i honestly cant tell which flavor is the camphor flavor, but this is a very pleasant everyday shou cha. i finished the small tuo a little over a weeks time in the office

My "to order" list is getting much to long, but I'm going to have to add this one to it. For the price, I guess you really can't go to wrong.

I know there is something I've tasted that had a slight camphor taste to it, but for the life of me I can't remember. its going to drive me nuts thinking about it now.

I suspect that both the tea and the reviewer have matured and improved since then!
