Yixing / Gaiwan size of choice ??

by expatCanuck » Dec 31st, '08, 11:24

Greetings, campers --
What's your brewing vessel size of choice for a typical one drinker session?
And while we're at it ... do you prefer a Gaiwan? Yixing? Mug? Soup tin?
(Perhaps that'll be a separate poll.)

Cheers,

- Richard

My 2 yixings are both 130 and my gaiwan is 100, so I just put down 130, however I love the 100 ml. gaiwan

As of right now I have 2 yixing pots and a basic gaiwan.

My sheng pot measures around 140ml filled with just water. The other pot I use mainly for the greener rolled oolongs I don't have a measurement for, I'll have to check that one as I got it from the oolong box pass. Its a bit more though, probably arond 150-170 range.

As for my gaiwan, its a 120ml basic gaiwan. I'm actually looking for one thats about the same size but just better quality, perhaps a bit heavier, thicker walled, nicer...

Most of my oolong and pu-erh brewing (I hesitate to call it gongfu), happens in a 140mL gaiwan. I have an yixing pot that I sometimes use for darker oolongs. It's a little bigger than the gaiwan, but not by much. While I definitely appreciate the aesthetic qualities of yixing ware, I find brewing in a gaiwan to be more enjoyable, perhaps because of being able to see the leaves better. Also, gaiwans are cheap and I won't cry if I break one.

Since I try to avoid fair cups, for me it's all about matching the brewing vessel to the cup, so 100 to 125 is my ideal size.

Mine all seem to be in the 100-120 ml range, so I guess that must be what I like :)

I brew in the gaiwan, then decant to a small (usually Japanese-made) cup of similar size.

Well for pu-erh I use 150ml Yixing which I found is the recommended size for puerh. For Gaiwan, of which I rarely use for puerh, I use 130ml.

I try to stick within 130ml, cos I drink mostly alone. For others, I use huge Gaiwan.

"Fairness" cups, to ensure that each guest gets the same blend. Some may enjoy the often brutal first brew, while others may prefer later infusions where things may have settled down a bit (or when new flavors emerge).

In my house, they're known as "unfair" cups.

I like my 250ml yixing pot but for a gaiwan, I use about 125ml.
Good tea drinking,
Steve
