Healthy herbs, rooibos, honeybush, decaf tea, and yerba mate.

Does Chamomile and other herbs really work?

Postby shardy53 » Feb 15th, '09, 20:41

I was just wondering if Teas like Tazo Calm, Celestial Seasonings Sleepytime, Chamomile etc reall make you calm and ready for sleep. or is it just the power of suggestion? Is there a real physical effect?

Thanks,
Steve

Chamomile does indeed induce a calm or relaxation. It's mild, but definitely there. On the downside, my chamomile tolerance is about 100% for a week after just one cup.

Chamomile and other herbal teas really do have many of the affects that people claim they do. But often the claims are exaggerated. You can do a Google search and find many scientific studies that have proven chamomile and other herbs to have medicinal properties.

Yes I drink chamomile teas they do have a slight calming effect. If you want something stronger go with a tea with valerian in It. Not sure if that Is spelled right.

I drink chamomile on occasion, as well as lemon balm. I find that there are definite sedative qualities in both that help me relax. My mother goes out like a light after drinking some chamomile tea (and then she wakes up and asks what happened in whatever show we were watching, much to our annoyance). :D

I love chamomile, it is very relaxing, but I find that lavender is even more relaxing. I have a lavender rooibos at home and it practically knocks me out. They aren't going make you fall asleep the way drugs do, but like many herbs the effects are slower and gentler. I also love chamomile when I am sick, it is very soothing.

There's a nice chamomile blend with lavender by Harney Teas

I think it's called Yellow & Blue. I like it a lot. Good tasting and very relaxing. Some herbs work well for different conditions: I find this blend works after the end of a long day as a sort of relaxer and pick-me-up at the same time, gives clarity. Before sleep, it helps me to have a good sleep.

chamomile party

Postby buddha nature » Feb 22nd, '09, 21:04

I had a tea party with friends last week and we tasted about 15 teas. I saved the decaf stuff for last, because we were all thoroughly caffeinated by then. We noticed that about 3 cups (the cups were tiny) into the lavender and chamomile blends we were quite a bit more mellow. The party was a blast, and maybe were we tea intoxicated, but it seemed like the chamomile and rooibus made us all a bit more zen...

I haven't tried chamomile yet but this season Im planing on growing some. I do have lemon balm and it is amazing to me. Its so calming and relaxing I thought something was wrong the first time I drank it like I was allergic or something it was so calming.
