Years old RofT green tea bags

by peachaddict » Apr 24th, '06, 17:58

I have most of a canister of them. I was drinking green tea a lot for a while before I switched to black tea, and my intake when I started was bagged because there was no loose in the house. Just before I found a loose green, I got a canister of RofT green tea bags. I loved the tea, but I got the loose and haven't messed with the bags for a few years now. My question is, should they still be good? I was afraid to try one because I wasn't sure, but I tried one and didn't like it (but I think that was because of the time I was drinking it). I'm willing to try another, but I just want to know if it should still be normal because the when I tried it again it was odd. Maybe I just got too used to blacks. If it helps, i've been storing the bags in the canister and the canister in a cool, dry place.

Without knowing quite how old this tea is, I'd venture to say that you won't know if it's still good until you try it again. :)

...you hate to throw old tea away...don't you. I know I do. Keep it for years...and years...especially if it is in a cool tin. I have more than my share of RoT in tins that I am still in denial about.

Realistically, green tea fannings, which are generally used for bags, last for a shorter period of time than black fannings. I would say, bite the bullet, and move past the denial stage to grieving, then acceptance stages...those bags have probably lost their edge.

They might be ok for flavored iced tea...if you have flavorings. If you are trying to get back into greens, get some good fresh loose from your fav supplier.

Just my opinion...hypocritical though it may be...

Dump the tea. A few years old tea leaves will be bad, not to mention bags. Dump it. Keep the canister if you really want...

Try a cup! They loose flavor complexity, but maybe with two bags or a slower steep, you will have something good. Not great, but good.

Wow! I'm surprised at the number of replies! I'm very happy because this is very helpful. I'll go with Kodoma first and try another cup (I think I'll do it tonight - I'm in the mood). If it does seem to have lost its edge (it is about 2-4 years old, actually), I'll go with all you guys and dump it. I hate to dump tea (feels like a waste), but it was kind of a waste to let it sit so long. Thanks, everyone for your advice. I really appreciate it.

Oh, and Chip and Andy -   . (Selling it for $200 to Andy  )

But I don't have that kind of money....

For a 2-4 year old teabag green tea, it will definately be stale. Green tea goes stale in a year or two depending on how well it's sealed, and green tea teabags will go stale much much faster. Teabags usually aren't very fresh to begin with anyway.

Ha ha  . But I did try another cup of it. It wasn't just me. The tea isn't great now. It's stale. But there's something about it that I still like (I don't know why), so I'm going to keep it for now and see if I still like it sometime other than tonight. Just an update. Thanks, guys!

Unless anyone wants it! Bidding starts at $0.15! Do I hear $0.20? $0.30? $0.40?... (btw, just kidding - not selling and i don't think anyone'll want it).

I force myself to drink the old tea that I can't give away because it would be a shame to just trash it
