I know with 100% certainty that, if I tried to drink tea from a gaiwan this way, it would be the last thing I did before scalding hot water poured down the front of me.

I use this method for brewing Hou Kui. I put a few leaves in a tall glass and sip from it until the tea is gone and then put in some more hot water and start all over.

Kind of icks me out for some reason. I would agree to try it, I guess, but...
I know. Very closed minded of me.
Today's tea was Earl Grey. This evening's will be either one of the pu's or assam.

Love it! That's how my granny drank tea in the old days... Perhaps not so old as in the Dynasty

I actually do this pretty often, especially at school. I don't mind the occasional leaf in mouth.
Today, BaoZhong from the OTTI that was still sitting in the cabinet. Next up will be an '07 8582.

i keep meaning to try it this way but somehow i never get arround to it, i enjoy teas such as oolong and white which i think would work well this way, i just really enjoy pouring from gaiwan/teapot into teacup. i really should get used to drinkning this way for travel purposes.

Thank you to all those who have colored our TeaDay!!!
I will do this on occasion, mostly with Chinese greens ... oh and Taiwan greens. I guess I could do it with greener oolong, but the temp becomes quite an issue then??? Greens seem more condusive to me.
I really need Chinese greens, have not had a fresh Chinese or Taiwanese green for at least a year.
I prefer to use a glass so I can see what I am doing.
Great TD so far. Began with sencha, then matcha with the Mrs. in a ShyRabbit TA SO Summer chawan.
Wishing for a 3rd tea, maybe a mini session???

I have grandpa-brewed on occasion, but only with pu-erh or "Dragon Ball" tea (green tea and jasmine pearls-- my father and brother got it for me because they saw the name and know I'm an anime geek
). It's really neat to see the tealeaves come free from however they've been shaped, whether it be tiny spheres or bits of a pu brick. I couldn't discern any taste difference.
Several cups of pu-erh this afternoon, followed by a lot of iced green tea. Currently drinking some shoumei white tea.

Yah, I mostly seem to brew this way at school - what with on the hustle and clutter its just easier. I don't love it though, I guess if I have a teapot around, I'd rather use it.

I went to a tea bar in Portland that served me a really nice Jasmine Phoenix Pearls and they served it in a gaiwan. The leaves were loose and they just told me to brush the leaves back with the lid as I drank. It worked and didn't pose a problem. I've noticed a lot of leaves fall to the bottom when they are steeping and they don't pose any problem.
I'd say the only problem I have encountered is if you're a slow sipper (like me) I feel the tea begins to oversteep and become astringent.

It is a new TeaDay, continue with the weekend topic, create your own, share what is in your cup throughout the day.
Began the TD with a tasting of Yame Fukamushi from Den's. SweeTea did not miss this opp to sample another Yutaka Midori ... Gandalf and Fuji just visited the TeaTable sans tea.
