I just picked this up today, randomly. I didn't really expect to, but I ended up tasting it with the shop owner, we both found it to be too bitter, thus allowing me to negotiate even more... yada yada yada.

He said he thinks this is a 97 cake and was some kind of memorial for hong kong returning to china. Yay imperialism!

what does it mean when a 10 year old cake is still bitter?

Mmmmm I don't know if it's 250 or 357. My guess is that you're right and that it's 250, but I have no scale to measure that much tea.

As for the other questions, I can't get more pics right now, but the back of the cake had a big 97 Imprinted in the middle of it, with chinese script running around it.

The liquid was not green like most young shengs I've had. More of a reddish orange, but not as dark as any shus I've seen.

I don't know how easy it was to break, but now that I think of it, I think he mainly used small bits and no really big chunks. ACTUALLY, now that I think of it, he really let that tea steep for a long time! He didn't rinse it and the first infusion was about 1.5 minutes, which we DRANK.

Wow I don't think any pu is going to taste good with a first steep like that!
Where did you purchase this exactly? The guy must not have known what he was doing, or got caught up in conversation, or something...

Well, ya. I obviously couldn't just jump in and say "WTF are you doing?!?!?!? You kill da pu man!" I think he just doesn't drink much pu, and we can't blame him if that's how he brews it.

I would also like to mention that the cake is not very fragrant. I can barely smell it when I put my nose right up to it, which is probably not very normal.

The Tong Song!

by Manatoa » Nov 13th, '08, 14:54

I'm new to the board and thought I'd introduce myself by showing my collection.

These are the teas I have in tong or tong-equivalent quantity or more.

Row 1: some 2004 600g Silver Tip cakes, 2004 7542, 2003 7542, 2003 or 2004 Tonq Qing (Jiu Wan) Centenary.

Row 2: more 2004 7542, Probably fake but damn good anyways 2003 Big Green tree, 2005 6FTM Yiwu

Row 3: 2004 Haiwan Lao Tong Zhi, 2003 Dadugang 1 kilo wild arbor brick.

All Sheng. All but the Big Green is from YSLCC.

I got introduced to good pu'erh in KL in 2002 and acquired TAD really badly after I got home (sadly too late to capitalize on some deals that are insane by today's standard: 1997 7542 for $7.50, anyone?). After looking in vain for good pu'erh in my home town of Winnipeg, Canada for about a year I found Scott of YSLLC who was still Babywrapper on ebay at that point and a year or so later I had a collection of 40 kg.

There's no quicker way to make friends around here than to flash your pu! That is an impressive collection and some impressive history under your belt. I hope we can learn a lot from you. I already have ... never heard of Scott's Babywrapper days!
