these are some finds in Chinatown, just cheap ones, but I'm still curious to see if someone can tell me more.
It's hard to tell from one photo. They look very shiny. What do they smell like?
I've taken the picture in the sun, that's maybe why they look overly shiny. The smell is neutral, I tried tea in them and the taste is smooth.

[quote="futurebird"]I love shupinghu teapots. How old are they? What is the clay like?[/quote

I like the clays. As for how old they are, I'm never so sure with yixings. The one on the right is supposed to be from the 90s and the other 2 possibly 80s. Would be curious to know what other teachatters think though.

I have owned a teapot from sampletea for several years. It's one of my best teapots. (1990's Yixing Factory 5 Zi Qie Ni Shui Ping Hu Teapot, 90ml)  clay is excellent and the craftmanship perfect. I wish could find another 90ml pot like this one. (cough cough ahem anyone??) Sampletea also has a 30ml version of this pot so I bought ....two of them. (yeah) I love tiny teapots especially when they have crisp details.

I was comparing the the patina on the larger pot to the newer small ones on new year's eve when we had guests over for tea. "look you can see how the teapot has changed over time" I said (I'm always trying to get more people interested in tea.) I wanted them to see the change in the patina from the wuyi oolongs that I drink in the larger teapot. See?

My friend said "It grew THAT much?"

LOL well, I guess that is a lesser known effect of "feeding" a teapot.

Indeed really nice to see how it has changed over time!
But 30ml?! Do you really use them? I have one with about 50ml which already is small but 30ml?! :D

Oh yes. Some of this aged pureh is so dear. It's also ... persistent. A good 7542 could keep going for 15 infusions. 15x100ml is a lot of tea especially if you like to have variety.

And I will not be tossing those leaves before they are done!

A tiny pot means I can do 15x30ml... then move on to something else. It also means I can taste an expensive tea with a very small sample.

Also, they are just so lovely!

I agree, 100ml sometimes can be too big but I never had the feeling that I needed a teapot smaller than 50ml. :D

Nevertheless they look great!

chrl42 wrote:It's really hard to define the clays of Factory 1..since there are too many. Late-80s~97 Zini ones are mostly manganese-doped, yet the color of each year was different I heard, from obvervation, square-sticker period's zini ones tended towards purple-ish while hologram-sticker period's zini ones tended towards brown-ish. Some Pin Zi was mixed with the Shi Huang clay.

It's almost too hard...there was also specific Pin Zini called Te (special) Pin Zini, grades are 1~4. The grade numbers are stamped on the surfaces of the clays. For me, there is no way to confirm which one really is Te-Pin...since many experts opinions differed on this. Grade 1 and 2 were reserved for masters.

Anyways, after 82-series the batches of clay used by masters and used for making commercial pots were not the same. But still quality mine #4~#5 clays.
Hi there,

Is that a translation from a Chinese source?

I came across that "shi huang" clay (original name of the zhao zhuang zhuni clay) in the following site:

Introduction of zhuni clay

So potters mixed zini and zhuni clays, didn't they? What was the purpose for doing that? Artistic or financial?

Cheers!

Any ideas on this one? No idea if it's Yixing, but personally I like the pot. The lid fits very well (completely stops pouring when you block the hole).

Thanks! :) I guess it is a 'semi-handmade' one? Just out of interest, any guess on its value on the Western market?

It is about 12 cm (4.7") long and 6 cm (2.4") high. A nice size for 2 small (or perhaps 4 tiny gong-fu-style) cups.
