How many teapots do I need?

Seriously I think 200 should be enough. I have less than 100. Compared with some other teachatters, I am so proud of my self-discipline.

I have three teapots that almost never get used anymore. Since i bought my first gaiwan, I have only used my teapots a few times, the gaiwan is just more convenient and easier to clean imo. I have five gaiwan, two larger (6-7 oz) and three smaller (3-4 oz). I use the smaller ones for comparing teas, especially new samples and the larger ones for my regular tea drinking. If i am making a tea i know i will get many infusions out of (oolong for example) i will use the smaller gaiwan, but for black, white, herbal i use the larger.

I feel quite comfortable with my collection right now. I have...

- 120ml modern Hong Ni pot for everyday light to medium rolled oolongs.
- 40ml '80s Hong Ni pot for expensive light rolled oolongs like Da Yu Ling.
- 40ml '80s Muo Lu Ni pot for medium to dark roast rolled oolongs.
- 65ml '70s Hong Ni pot for Wu Yi oolong.
- 110ml modern Hong Ni pot for cooked puer and loose aged sheng.
- 150ml late 60's Zi Ni pot for young sheng puer.

- 90ml porcelain Gaiwan for Dan Cong, Oriental Beauty, Bao Zhong, and expensive aged sheng puer.

- 120ml Tokoname kyusu for green and white tea.

With this set up, I feel quite able to cover all my bases, however I have no doubt at all that quite a few more pots will be in my future. My collection feels incomplete without some vintage Zhuni, and I would like a pot to dedicate to aged puer too.

The best advice I can give you, especially because you are self-described OCD, is to avoid cheap pots! Save up your pennies and go for the good clay. Otherwise you will probably end up replacing them in the future anyway.

It's all a matter of personal choice, but I only use my Gaiwans for brewing Green Tea. I've always preferred using teapots. I don't know if it's their beauty, or the culture behind them, or if its just how they handle, but I use them almost exclusively. I don't want to count how many I have though.

I use a Zisha Teapot for everything but Green Tea.
