Best kettle (or should I buy a clear kettle?)

All, my old kettle is giving out after ten years of service. I haven't given much thought to the best kettle I can get for my glasstop stove. It might be fun to try a clear kettle so I could see it boiling, but that's not necessary. Any suggestions? Does a kettle really matter very much? I'm not being sarcastic, I have no idea if a kettle really matters.

Cast iron and pure silver are the two materials that give people shudders of delight, but they are dependent on your budgets of money and devotion. (I don't imagine you are talking about a ceramic kettle made of yixing clay.) Get whatever suits your preparation setup and strikes your fancy.

I'm using a Bonavita 1.0L Gooseneck Variable Temperature both at home and at work. Wouldn't change for anything else, it's very convenient.

Go with pyrex/borosilicate and use good water.

Is there a minimum requirement of water for boiling in the bonavita? I usually don't boil more than 4-8 oz at a time and my water boiler only goes up to 17 oz with a 2 oz minimum, so 1 liter seems a little intimidating to me!

I almost never boil 1L. It works properly even with a minimal amount of water. I don't see any issue using that kettle with 4 oz of water.

glass kettles don't change the water in any way at all so that is nice but they are pretty fragile to my experience. I had a really nice one until disaster struck and a micro crack turned into a giant scar across the entire pot. R.I.P

I put very little water in mine at a time. The only thing is if you're wanting accurate temp readings you need to make sure the thermometer probe that sticks up from the bottom is fully submerged, which happens at maybe around 8 or 10 ounces of water. I usually use about that much, then use half the water, add 5 ounces fresh water to the kettle, use half again, then dump it into a glass for drinking water and add all fresh water to the kettle again.
